the strictures that bind us—hemp collars and guitar strings—
constrict, and I contract; the breath snared in my lungs
by the thought of your name.
this love, fraternal-erotic, shaded incestuous in its familiarity
is the sensation of falling that wakes me, safe in bed.
your hands the cool air that soothes away the sun’s blight,
your eyes the burst of warmth as I recognize,
deep within an infinity of black, a galaxy whose name I know.
the chance memory of your existence stills the world,
and the buzzing humming whining droning postmodern aria;
within the coming storm, windchimes peal:
l’amour est une oiseau rebelle.

-

Title derived from "L'amour est une oiseau rebelle," ("Love is a rebellious bird") a song from Bizet's opera Carmen. An excerpt, translated into English:

Love is a gypsy boy, 'tis true
He ever was and ever will be free;
Love you not me, then I love you.
