I passed by the man who, to my eyes, was new. As we walked past each other he smiled, his lips thin and chapped; I smiled back, being sure not to offend the stranger in any way. As his brown eyes met mine I felt a quick flash of guilt and pain in the back of my mind, causing my heart to halt its beating for only a split-second. His hair covered his face like a thinly woven net, but it didn’t seem to cover countless scars on the right-side of his face. He moved his hair out of his face with a quick flick of his head, revealing a small, but noticeable cut under his left eye. The image of this man burned into the back of my eyes and I never forgot about the man that I passed who, to my eyes, was new.
