After Class Hours
Chapter Two – Lena
“Line up, girls!”
Mrs. McCoy was a stout woman with a fierce face and a much fiercer attitude. She was clearly a woman you should not cross. She was also one of Evencourt High’s gym teachers.
Mrs. McCoy blew her whistle and her gym class began.
Lena Monroe jogged towards the end of the line and breathed hard. She hated gym with passion. Her light brown hair pulled up in a ponytail and her emerald green eyes had a glint of determination in them. She was the school’s resident outcast.
“We’re going to play some volleyball today!” Mrs. McCoy announced, holding up a volleyball in her hand. A few girls groaned. She shot them a look.
“Team A will compose of Monroe, Mitchell, Ronalds, Anderson, Johnson and Michaels.”
Lena sighed and ran towards her team. Why she was always picked first in games she never understood, but she couldn’t fight with the teacher. She didn’t need any trouble. Luckily her team also included her best friend, Trina Michaels.
“Hey, Lena,” Trina greeted, grinning and they slapped a high-five.
Mrs. McCoy cleared her throat and scanner her list. “Team B will compose of Drake, Jameson, Smith, Portman, Watson and… Andrews.”
Lena rolled her eyes and tuck some of her brown hair behind her ear. As much as she despised gym… she loathed Freya Andrew more than anything. She watched as Freya and her perfect blonde hair joined her team which composed of most of her equally airhead friends.
“I want a clean game, ladies,” Mrs. McCoy said, looking at all of them with a serious expression on her face. She meant business.
She blew her whistle again and the game was on.
“Hey Monroe, Let’s see if you can actually hit a ball!” Freya teased, looking at Lena with a smug look on her face. Lena scowled and took the ball from Mrs. McCoy so that she could serve.
“Game on!”
Lena hit her serve and Freya hit it right back. Tara Mitchell missed it by an inch and Team B got their first point.
“You guys suck at this," Michelle Smith said, laughing with Freya joining her. Lena felt her temper rise.
A few more plays and in the end, Team B was up by only one point and it was Freya’s turn to serve.
Freya laughed and called Lena.
Lena turned to look at her, a guarded look on her fair face.
“Monroe, I heard from my mother last night that your mom ran out on you and your loser dad with your uncle. Heard they had an affair.” Freya looked at Lena’s expression with fascination. Clearly she was enjoying this.
Lena’s blood began to boil. Shut up, her mind screamed, just shut the hell up!
“Do you think that you’ll be just like your mom, Monroe?” she pushed on, smirking at Lena’s scowling face.
Freya laughed. “’Cause I think you’ll be like her… a sad, pleasure-seeking bitch who can’t stay in one place.”
That does it, Lena thought, glaring at Freya and clenching her fists. Trina saw this and nudged her with her elbow.
“Lena, please calm down. Don’t listen to her,” she said, concern seeping through her voice. Lena faced her and gave her a forced smile.
“Don’t worry, Trin… It’ll be fine,” she replied, grinning. Trina cringed. This did not look good to her. And if she knew Lena… she wouldn’t be taking this kind of insults down calmly.
“Last serve, girls! Andrews, come up here now and serve!” Mrs. McCoy cried, blowing her whistle for the umpteenth time.
Freya pulled her arm back and hit the volleyball over the net smoothly.
The ball sailed towards Lena who was anticipating it. A look of determination was on her emerald green eyes as she jumped up and…
“Lena!”
“I don’t even want to know how this all started but what I would like to know is why in the world would you hit Ms. Andrews on the face with a volleyball?” Mr. Collins asked, shaking his head in disbelief.
Lena shrugged. “It’s volleyball, Mr. Collins. It’s bound to happen sooner or later.”
Mr. Collins sighed. “Yes, it’s bound to happen… but you cannot possibly ‘accidentally’ hit a player that could make her nose bleed.”
“I didn’t hit her that hard,” she said, suppressing a smile.
“Considering the bruise that’s begun to formulate around Ms. Andrews’ nose… I’d say that you did hit her that hard.”
Lena couldn’t help but smile. She knew she was in trouble, but she didn’t care. She enjoyed hurting someone for once… especially since it was Freya Andrews that she had hit.
She hoped to do it again.
“Don’t think that this kind of behavior will go unpunished,” Mr. Collins said, finally noticing her smile. Lena raised an eyebrow.
“Of course not,” she said, looking at her fingernails.
“So aside from detention, you will be helping Mr. Reynolds with his janitorial duties.”
Lena bit back a groan of disgust. Damn it, janitorial duty? she though, rolling her eyes.
“Once Mr. Reynolds gives me a report saying that you’ve learned your lesson on controlling your temper, then that’s when you can get out of cleaning duty.” Mr. Collins looked at Lena. “Sounds fine?”
Lena scoffed but said nothing.
It’s not like I have a choice right? she thought, rolling her eyes. She wanted to say something but thought better of it. She couldn’t risk suspension if she complained.
“Fine, I’ll help Mr. Reynolds after school until he says so,” she said, grimly.
Mr. Collins nodded. “Well, you can go now. I don’t want you to be late for your next class.” He motioned her to leave the room and Lena obliged. She couldn’t wait to get out of there anyway.
She quickly walked out of the principal’s office and found Trina outside, waiting for her. Lena gave her a smile and they started walking towards their next class.
“So what did Mr. Collins say?” Trina asked, looking at Lena curiously.
Lena sighed. “I got detention until next Friday and I’ve got to help Mr. Reynolds out with his job until he says I can go…”
Trina made a tsk tsk sound and looked at her sympathetically. “Oh wow, that sucks.” She breathed.
Lena rolled her eyes and shrugged. “It’ll be okay… it’s a price to pay for hitting Andrew squarely on the face.”
They both laughed at the same time as they remembered the earlier incident. The look of Freya Andrews face was worth the detention Lena got from it.
The continued laughing as they made their way through the halls… not exactly looking where they were going. Lena was too preoccupied with the image of Freya’s shocked face still on her mind to really mind where she was going.
Accidentally, she bumped into someone.
A rather tall, jet-black haired, blue-eyed someone…
“Oh, sorry,” she said, shooting the boy a look of apology. He gave her a weak smile and shrugged it off.
“Yeah, it’s okay,” he said, looking straight at her. Lena’s breath caught. His pale blue eyes were hypnotic. It drew her in.
The boy gave her a small wave before he walked off, leaving Lena speechless. Trina grinned and nudged her.
“Hey, Monroe. Snap out of it.”
Lena grinned sheepishly. That was embarrassing, she thought as they walked to their class.
Then Lena unconsciously looked behind her, secretly hoping to catch a glimpse of the blue-eyed stranger. She laughed inwardly at herself.
What am I doing?
