do you remember

-:-

remember the first time you saw me?
seventh grade and oh so grown – up
you thought i was a snob
wheni cut in front of you
and your important conversation
(because Chris said Kyle liked Krissy)

our days of band and sharing lunches
and those yearbooks we stole
because we worked so hard
to make them

-:-

remember the year after
our day on the trampoline
sprinklers and sunshine was more than enough
(we would rather jump on our own
then ski with the school)

or the night we slept in your basement
etching our names matched into
‘true love’
the game of finding our fate

-:-

and remember ninth grade
when you were a ‘punk’
and slightly cliché
but we still had our star struck moment
all dressed up and under the lights
on stage
confessions of a teenage drama queen’
had never fit a pair
quite so well
as us

-:-

remember last year
when my sweet sixteen
couldn’t seem to be any more sour
you came with everyone else in tow
kidnapped me, wrote me a song,
and made my night
(forever)

-

do you remember last june
and our sisterhood campout
(there was never a better way
to start the summer)
all our slumber parties
and walks on country roads
day or night
getting lost in cornfields
guided only by the moon

remember that hot july
when we swam
till we were out of breath
put our clothes on over our suits
and drove to town
for a dose of coldplay
only to come back
and jump in the water again
( because even at midnight
it still felt warm)

the end of august
called for that surprise pool party
giggles and streamers
all strung about
the secret affair

though that night it seemed
the constellations had something
slightly more tragic in mind

-:-

remember when you taught me
my very first chord
guiding me from roadie to rock star
in time for our debut
your drum solo on the dresser
while my fingers danced along
the (make believe) frets
speakers blaring
as we collapsed in laughter
and the show
was sold out

(because we would have never
let anyone else see)

-:-

do you remember this year
and all our laughs and tears
days of windows rolled down
rain or sunny weather
as we sang out to the country roads
we raced through
hoping to find escape
somewhere along the way

do you remember
all the poetry we wrote
through classes
(it always seemed
to pass the time)

we each took turns
breaking down
and somehow found a way
to put each other back together
better than before

-

remember when
you sang your song on stage
i watched you from the audience
and mouthed all the words
(because we sang the words so many times
we knew the song by heart)

and do you remember
when she dropped me off
at your curb

while i tried to choke back the tears
because all i wanted was to hear you say
that everything would be ok

you were at work and so you couldn’t
be there right away
but the fact that you wanted to
meant even more

and you did come
and we spent that night
like all our nights
of wishing through the skylight
a window to the outside world
reflected into ours

all the wishes we made
on the stars
about friends, about dreams, about love
and do you remember
when i made this list
and knew
that it would never
ever end?
