“I brought you a snack.” The voice said, giving me a pearl white smile. A plate of sliced apples and Low Fat caramel dip was placed in front of me. I reached out and grabbed an apple slice with my long graceful fingers and dipped it in the caramel. Then a long white spoon was slipped between my fingers and I dipped it into the welcoming caramel.
“So why are you still here?” the voice whispered again, this time near my earlobe. I snorted and licked the caramel off the spoon.
“I don’t leave for my flight for another two hours Jeff. Do you want me to leave now?” I asked, sticking the spoon all the way into my mouth. The scrape of chair legs against my cherry wood floor and Jeff was sitting next to me. His left hand slowly slid between my legs and trailed along my inner thigh. I gave a quiet groan and leaned back on two legs.
“Mistie had her baby today. Unfortunately, I’m the dad.” Jeff whispered into my ear. My eyes flew open and I leaned too far back into the chair and ended up on the ground.
“What!” I screeched, staring up towards him, tears pricking my sea green eyes. He nodded slowly and turned his back towards me. I sat up slowly, rubbing my dry, cracked elbow momentarily. Then I raised myself up from my knees and kneaded five fingers into Jeff’s back.
“Sorry lover. I didn’t mean it like that. I know things are gone between you two but I didn’t know she was pregnant. ‘Course sweetie, I haven’t seen her in over a year.” I slurred a few of my words together as I kept kneading my fingers into his tense shoulders. Jeff shrugged the graceful fingers away and put his head between his calloused hands. I sighed and picked up my chair, standing it upright and took a tense seat on the worn cushion.
“Don’t worry Ry, I’ll deal with it.” Jeff said, shaking his head slowly. I shook my head no angrily and my shaggy long brown hair fell before my eyes. He laughed quietly and reached over to push the strands of hair out of my face.
“You look cute like that,” Jeff said quietly, his gaze traveling sideways out towards the window near us. Already the moon is high in the black sky even though it’s only eight forty. I smiled towards him and rested my head on his strong shoulder, listening to his blood pounding. As weird as it sounds, I can hear things that most can’t. At first Jeff was afraid of me because of that but eventually we became who we are now.
“A mismatched pair are we?” Jeff says in a joking voice, giving me a light punch. I nod my agreement and stand up. My wristwatch is already beeping, letting me know I have less than an hour to get to the airport. I stand and gaze down towards Jeff’s sad face. His blue eyes flashed through their emotions and finally settled on staying ice looking. That was one of the few things I loved the most about Jeff; his eyes were something else and unlike anyone else’s. I leaned down and placed a small kiss on his left cheek and ran my fingers through his glossy blonde hair. He reached up and covered my whole hand with his own and gave me a gentle squeeze.
“I’ll see you in a couple weeks then, little boy.” I smirked, calling him by his nickname. He nodded and stood up to gather me in his famous bear hugs.
“I’ll see you later too, Ry-Rye.” calling me by my own nickname, burying his nose into my sweet smelling hair. I gripped his white-tee and squeezed him a little harder before stepping away. I would only be gone for two weeks, away on a business meeting. I gathered my already packed bags and slipped out of my own room, glancing back to see him sitting back down with his head in his lap.
A sunset that paints itself into your mind,
So when you close your eyes that’s all you can see.
Your words are something close to honey.
Sweet but if taken in too fast bitter tasting.
Your hands are like a gentle wind,
Bidding you to come closer until you feel the bite.
-Written by Me- “You Were Like…”
I sat next to the window on the airplane. I didn’t really know why but I felt more calm and relaxed next to a window whenever I was flying. Call me crazy but it gave me a sense of security. Next to me an older man slept, snoring quietly and occasionally stretching his shoulders to give a small, but noticeable pop. I glanced down at my little Razor cell phone, seeing if I had any text messages. None whatsoever so that meant Jeff was asleep. I sighed inaudibly and closed my tired eyes, drifting off to slumber rather quickly.
oOoOoOoOoO
I awoke to the sound of a stewardess letting us know in twenty minutes we would be landing. Her Japanese accent was noticeable but I actually loved hearing someone with a Japanese accent. I may travel the whole world but one of my favorite places was Japan. I lived and studied there for a little over six years and that’s where one of my companies was stationed. But today wasn’t one of my days to go check up on the company; it was about merging with another.
I heard the stewardess tell us to buckle ourselves in and I did slowly. This was the only part I absolutely hated about flying, landing. The airplane touched land and I felt my stomach do a couple flip-flops. Then we were allowed off and I stood up slowly, stretching my cramped muscles. We excited and stepped into the little detectors. One of the officers noticed and recognized me and smiled towards me. I returned his smile with a small bow and gathered up on my belongings.
My cell phone vibrated in my pocket and I dug into the leather jacket to pull the silver phone out. Jeff’s name showed across the top and I flipped the phone open and pressed it tightly to my ear.
“How you doin’ baby?” he asked quietly, I could hear a clatter in the background and I knew he was in the kitchen eating. I smiled to myself and switched ears so I could rest the phone against my left shoulder.
“I’m doing good. How about you? Have you gone to see Mistie and the baby?” I asked, smiling and waving to those who were doing the same to me. I heard his small intake of air and I stepped outside and a cab was already waiting for me.
“I haven’t gone to see either of them, but I did call but Mistie hung up on me. Claims that if I’m not going to be the baby’s daddy then she doesn’t want me around the kid.” Jeff said, a crash following his words. I sighed, hoping that he wouldn’t destroy everything while I was gone. I slid across the worn seat in the cab and the door slammed shut after me.
“What does she want you to do?” I asked, hoping what I thought the answer was wasn’t the right one. Another crash and a long string of cusswords followed before he spoke into the phone.
“She wants marriage. She wants me to marry her before I get to see my kid!” Jeff shouted, two more crashes. At this rate I was going to return home and have to go shopping for new things, again.
“She wants you to marry her?” I squeaked, startling the cab driver and he glanced back towards me. A grumble gave me my answer.
“Why won’t she let you see your kid? I mean it is yours isn’t it?” I asked, switching ears again. He grunted again and I heard a clatter of glass in the background once more. Oh great, he found the alcohol. I don’t want to deal with a drunk Jeff right now, I thought sadly as I heard him rummaging through the drawers.
“Yeah, it’s my kid. She was a virgin before me and she claims I’m the only one she fucked around with.” he said quietly and the bottle was placed on the counter loudly.
“Don’t worry about it then. If you’d like, you could come to Japan until I’m supposed to go home. That way you don’t have to worry about dealing with Mistie.” I suggested, handing a piece of paper to the driver to give him the directions.
“Naw, I don’t want to interrupt you with your work. I’ll be fine here for a couple weeks.” Jeff said and I could hear him open the fridge door and put the bottle back in there.
“All right. I’ll talk to you later, I’m about there now.” I said.
“Ok.. I’ll talk to you later. Oh, and Ry,” he said quietly. “I love you.” then the phone clicked in my ear and my phone disconnected. I stuffed the Razor back into my pocket and the cab came to a stop.
“Here you are,” the driver said in perfect English. I nodded and slid out of the car, grabbing my bags and shutting the door behind me. A large, grand looking hotel stood in front of me, people walking in and out of the building. This usually isn’t the place where I stay since I live less than a block away. Heaving my travel shoulder pack across my sore shoulders, I walked the rest of the way towards my second apartment.
oOoOoOoOoO
I awoke to a phone buzzing loudly in my ears. I had forgotten to bring a new alarm clock so my phone was my alarm. I sighed and picked up the tiny thing, pushing the OFF button. My screen flashed a couple times letting me know I had one new text message and one missed call. I rolled over on my beige cough and flung the blue throw past my feet. I swung my cramped legs over the pillows I put around my body to stop me from falling off and sat up slowly.
I raised my arms above my head and stretched all ten fingers slowly and one by one. I pushed myself of the cough and stood on wobbly legs for a moment before stepping forward, pressing the messages button on my phone. Jeff had left a message letting me know he had gone to see Mistie again to see his child and was going to work so I wasn’t to call him. I smiled to myself and shut the phone. Sometimes he could be so funny in the simplest forms.
My phone vibrated in my hands and I flipped it open. A smooth voice came over the line and I recognized the man who I was supposed to meet with today.
oOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOoOo
(Meanwhile back home)
Jeff stared sadly to his home phone. It had been less than 32 hours since Ryan had left and already he was feeling down and out of it. His long yellowed hair was slicked past his shoulders and along the jaw line he was sporting a shadow. His eyes were just a bit bloodshot already and across his face was a new scratch. Ryan was going to freak when he came home if he still had that scratch. So he simply shrugged his shoulders and grabbed the Neosporin that was currently sitting on the counter.
“I guess I could go back to class.” Jeff said, raking his fingers through his hair. He sighed heavily and glanced towards the clock that was hanging above the fridge. He had gotten home a little over two hours ago from the hospital. Mistie wasn’t taking to things very well and was still threatening him with marriage.
“What a bitch..” he muttered, pulling a random chair out and sitting on it. Something sharp pricked through his jeans and he jumped up quickly. He rubbed his butt and picked up the needle that sat in the cushion. What the hell was that doing there? His thoughts asked him quietly as he stared at the sharp object. He brought the needle close to his skin and slowly pressed the point to his flesh. Then he slowly brought the needle down his arm and a trail of warm blood soon followed.
oOoOoOoO
Jeff slowly opened the wooden door before him, hearing the wails behind the closed door. He took a small breath and gulped down his fear he felt in his stomach. A pair of golden eyes turned towards him before narrowing into tiny slits. Jeff gave a small cough and nodded towards the bundle the woman held in her arms.
“Why are you here?” she asks in an icy tone. Jeff swallows and steps closer towards the two. Jeff wiped his sweaty palms against his baggy jeans.
“I want to see my daughter, Mistie. She is my kid and I have every right to see her, too.” Jeff said, staring towards the tiny girl that laid nestled in Mistie’s arms. Mistie shook her head no and went back to staring down at the little baby. Slowly Jeff crept forward, his hands at his sides.
“Why?” Jeff asked quietly, coming closer to the hospital bed. Mistie raised an eyebrow towards him.
“Why should I let you see your kid when you left me for a guy?” her words washed over him like ice.
