Kings and Kingdoms:
Daydreaming on a Rainy Day
James sighed and slammed his fist upon the table. Today was not the best day to be at school. His obnoxious teachers were stating their opinions on certain issues; the students were annoying as always. It was lunch time, and he had had about enough. Across the table in Mr. Drake’s classroom sat his best friends: Delia, Katie, and Iss.
“What’s up, James?” Iss asked, taking a slow sip from his soda bottle. James rolled his eyes and sat back.
“I hate school” he replied, sighing. They all sighed in reply.
“Dido” Delia said.
“Dido, dido” Katie replied, giggling.
“Well it’s not that bad…but it is boring” Iss said, putting his hand on his chin. At the front of Mr. Drake’s class stood a group of girls. They laughed and tossed their hair, talking about recent events. Delia turned around, looked at them, and rolled their eyes.
“Twits” she said, tapping her fingers on the table. They all laughed besides James.
“Come on James, cheer up” Katie said, giving her usual stern look when she was concerned or mad at someone. James ran his fingers through his hair and looked at the clock on the wall. It read 12:12.
“Well we do have more than a half hour until lunch ends.” He said, turning around to the computers that were behind him. “I’m going to waste my time” he said, smiling. He went to the computer nearest him and typed in the information to sign in. Iss got up and sat at the computer next to him, with Delia on James’ side and Katie on Iss’.
“I’m glad these computers take forever” Iss said sarcastically, taking another drink from his soda bottle. Delia and Katie agreed. James slapped the monitor and sighed again.
“Tell me about it! At least yours is loading, Iss!” he exclaimed, closing his eyes and laying his head down on the table.
“Aww poor Jamesy poo” Katie said, smiling. James looked over and rolled his eyes.
“Thanks for caring, Kat” he said. Kat nodded and turned back to her computer, typing in her information. Delia turned to James and poked his arm.
“James…look” she said, pointing at her screen. She had a webpage open that showed the coming weather forecast. “It’s going to be sunny! Yay!” Delia said, laughing. “That means I get to wear my new clothes!” she exclaimed.
“Woo hoo…” James replied in a monotone voice.
“What’s your problem with the sun, dude?” Delia asked. James shrugged.
“I don’t know…I can stand the sun but the only thing that gets on my nerves is the heat…”
“And the bees?” Kat asked. James turned red.
“Yes, ‘and the bees’. I don’t have a kind bone in my body for a bee or a wasp in fact. If one flies around me, I freak out” he said, breathing in. Iss closed the cap of his bottle and placed it down.
“They’re not that bad as long as they don’t sting you” he stated. “I mean, I’ve never been stung but I know not to aggravate them”.
“Yea I know, I’ve been smart to know that because I don’t want one crawling on me and stinging me a million times!” James said, getting redder in the face. Kat put her hands on her sides.
“I hate bees too, I got stung once…” she said, blushing.
“Really?” Delia asked. “You’ve never told me about that.” She said as she rose to her feet.
“I got stung somewhere…and they stung me more than once, may I add” Kat said.
“I’ve never been stung either” Delia added. “They may fly around me outside…but they don’t bother me”.
“You’re joking!” James exclaimed. “Not being afraid?! You’re insane!” Delia shrugged and looked at Iss’ screen.
“What you looking at, Iss?” she questioned.
“Nothing much…just a few game sites.” He replied, typing something into the internet address bar.
“Oh I’m so bored” Kat said, folding her arms and leaning down on the computer table. She closed her eyes.
“Good idea, Kat” James said, doing as Kat had done. Delia went over to the classroom tables and reached inside her backpack. She pulled out her “iPod” and turned it on. To her side sat her good friend Amelia and a few others who were chatting excitedly. Delia did as Kat and James had done and she fell asleep.
“What are we to do with him?” the man asked. He turned to another being to his right. It was a women shadowed by a cloak. James could see that the man wore a cloak also. Both of their faces were shadowed.
“Leave him for the moment. The time has not arrived yet” the woman replied softly. The man stood back and turned around.
“Your choice, your highness” he said, shrugging. The woman sighed and moved closer to James.
“You will see in time, Shadow, that by keeping him alive, we are to be benefited greatly”. James gasped and reached his hand up.
“Keep me alive?!”
“What the heck are you talking about?” Iss asked. James opened his eyes and looked around. The room was the same as before but he saw Delia and Kat asleep.
“They’re asleep?” James asked. Iss nodded and turned to Kat. “I wonder what they’re dreaming about…”
“I believe that if she were to possess this, then it would be in good, trustful hands” the woman said.
“Yes…but how do you know that you can trust a fifteen year old teenager?” the man asked, putting his hands on his sides. The woman turned and smiled.
“Do not worry, Nyoka. All will be good in time. I have yet to decide to give this to…but she would be a good candidate.” She said. Kat narrowed her eyebrows and put her hands on her sides.
“Just why exactly wouldn’t you trust me?” Kat asked. “Answer me please!”
“You’re dreaming too?” Iss asked. Kat sat up and nodded. She looked over at Delia to see her sleeping also.
“Talk about dreaming!” she exclaimed, putting her hands on her sides. She went over to Delia and looked at her closely. “Wonder what she’s dreaming about…”
“Do not fret, darling Miss Halikad” the woman said, smiling. “You are in good hands…or you are going to be once I have you” she stated very proudly. Delia shook her head.
“Why…why do you want me?” Delia asked frantically.
“You have what I lack, darling” she said, reaching forward more. Delia shook her head.
“I have nothing of yours! Nothing!”
“What’s wrong, Delia?” she asked, narrowing her eyebrows. Delia’s eyes popped open. She looked around, noticing that a few kids in the room were looking at her.
“Wha…oh” she said, blushing. James put his hand on his chin and stroked it.
“Hmm…we’ve all been having these weird dreams lately” he said.
“Yeah, besides me” Iss snapped.
“Sorry Iss…but I wonder why we have been having the dreams. I’m confused” Katie said. Iss shrugged.
“Well I’m not as tired as you guys, maybe”.
“Actually, I wasn’t really that tired” Delia said, turning her iPod off.
“I was…” Katie said. James sighed.
“Yeah, I didn’t get much sleep last night.” He replied quietly.
“My dream was creepy!” said Delia, Katie, and James at the same time. They laughed for a moment. Iss opened his soda bottle and took a quick drink.
“What were they about?” he asked abruptly, tapping his hands on the table that was next to him.
“Well mine was about these two people talking about ‘keeping me alive’ which spooked me out beyond cheese…” James said, looking as Kat tossed her hair back.
“Mine was about these two people who didn’t seem to have trust in me. Well, the man in it seemed to not trust me, but I’m not sure about the woman” she said. Delia sighed and looked at the ground.
“What about yours, Delia?” Iss questioned. Delia sighed heavily.
“Mine was about a woman, also. She accused me of having something of hers…” she told them. “I told her that I didn’t have anything of hers! She must have been crazy or something…” Delia exclaimed. They all looked at her. “What?!”
“Nothing…it’s just that our dreams were creepy” James said, slouching down in his seat.
“What did they mean…?” Kat asked.
“Who knows…” Delia replied.
“I want to know what they’re about…but maybe they were just our imaginations running wild or something” James said.
“Yeah, you know you all have a big imagination that runs wild sometimes” Iss said, looking at each of his friends.
“And what is that supposed to mean, Issy Iss?” Kat asked, putting her hands on her sides yet again. Iss rolled his eyes.
“Don’t call me that!” he snapped.
“Well you deserve it on the imagination comment” Delia told him. They laughed and smiled.
“Let’s just not worry about our dreams at the moment” James declared, straightening up. “The weather is looking up…” Outside, rain began to pour.
“Nice James, the only one who likes the rain” Delia said, frowning.
“He’s not the only one!” Kat told Delia. And for the rest of their twenty minutes of lunchtime, they went on to fight about the weather or what they planned to do on the weekend…as they always did, every day of the year. They were best friends.
