converse princess

-:-;-:-

she’s a converse princess
with sneakers peaking
from under her (magic) gown

fairy wand in hand
and butterfly net in tow
afternoon safaris
and water fights
with the boy next door

-

she sells tangerines
for ten cents a piece
though a wink and a smile
will more than suffice
(because the tooth fairy
paid in full)

-

collecting the shells
lined so perfectly along the shoreline
hoping that if she presses her ear
against the peach soft conch
maybe
just maybe
she’ll hear the mermaid sing

though all too soon
she’s lulled to sleep
by ocean waves

royal dreams don’t stray far
from the (beach towel) bed
and her castle
made of sand

climbing trees
because they say their branches
almost touch the sky

-

it’s when the world
was a playground
and the rhythm of life
was a swing

and…when you wish upon a star
your dreams come true.

i wonder what was lost
to make us think
that life
was anything more

i’d much rather be that girl
again – then the one too caught up
in dreaming
of places far far away

-

no fairytale will help
with sleep tonight
she’s gazing out the windowsill
(tiny) hands cupped
for the star she knows is falling
just for her

while her dreams are trapped like fireflies
illuminated in glass jars

..-:-..-:-..-:-..
