It was a deserted lot in the middle of nowhere. For some reason there was no grass, just hard compacted soil, and maybe a few weeds here and there. Like in a junkyard, only there weren’t any cars or trash. It was cold, and overcast and dark, and rainy, and everything had a bluish tinge to it. The car was parked near the side of the road. One of the doors was hanging open. The upholstery was getting wet, but neither of them cared enough to notice. She was taking long strides, but he was taller and caught up to her. He grabbed her and spun her around.
“What the hell is wrong with you?” he said, and shook her, hands on her upper arms. The rain was falling harder now, and her blouse was sticking to her skin. “Why are you throwing away the best thing you’ve got going for you?”
She looked up at him, and he didn’t know if it was tears or rainwater in her eyes. But she didn’t look like she was crying, and her mouth was twisted in a snarl. “You stupid fuck.” She shook his hands off her and stepped back. Her hands tightened into fists.
Suddenly he was on the ground. Despite the rain it was still rather hard, holding its own against forces that would turn it to mud. He looked up in astonishment, felt his lip. His fingers came away clean but he was still pissed. “What the fuck?” he said, looking up at her. Disbelief. He propped himself up on his arm and she dropped down next to him.
“I’m not throwing away the best thing I’ve got,” she said vehemently, but her voice was soft. And she kissed him. “Don’t you understand?”
His eyes were still closed when they broke away, and his hair matted to his forehead. Water trailed along her hair and ran onto his face. She looked at him, his eyelashes dark against his cold skin. They were both cold. Their faces were close. He felt something warm splash onto his cheek and opened his eyes. Her eyes were wet, and now he knew. He understood.
“It’s you.” She said.
