The Legend
Long ago, in the time of King Arthur, there was a family of dragons who called themselves Kakardesh. These dragons had established peace between them and the humans of King Arthur’s kingdom. For years they lived in peace, and helped each other in times of need. A dragon was present at every meeting of the round table and a knight was present for every meeting to the Kakardesh family. As time went by, the dragon family grew larger and so did the kingdom.
One day, a man mistook a young dragon for a dangerous animal and killed it. The dragons became outraged. King Arthur did all he could but only made the dragons even worse. In their outrage, the dragons declared war again the humans. The humans did not understand that the dragon killed would have been the next leader of the family. They did not wish to fight creatures that had been their friends for so long and knew that these dragons could do a ton of damage to anything they wished.
King Arthur refused to battle until his own son was attacked and almost killed by a dragon. He became outraged as well and finally fought back.
The war carried on for decades. One year, King Arthur’s son died and the elder dragon also died. This year became known as the year of morning. Each side was to busy morning their loss that they did not fight. When this year was over, the people attacked back with a fire burning in their heart. King Arthur wanted the Kakardesh to pay for what they had done to his son.
The dragons of Kakardesh also fought back with an avengement. They wanted the humans to suffer for everything that they had done. Soon, King Arthur became to old to fight and his younger son took over. His son had even better battle tactics than ever and the humans slowly began to win the war.
There soon came a time when every dragon was wounded and many were close to death, all except one. This young dragon grew up during the war. He had heard stories of how the humans used to be nice and how they had brought all suffering upon his nation. He believed that if the war stopped, both kingdoms would return to peace and everything would go back to the way it used to be.
This dragon was still too young to fight in the war and that is why he wasn’t wounded yet. Secretly he had befriended a human that many people thought to be evil. This human’s name was Merlin. Merlin was a wizard but he never meant to harm anyone. The people around him wished to stay away from him and he never went out for anything. They clamed he was evil but was never put to death because people thought that if they tried to kill him, he would kill everyone and curse the ones left alive. So, Merlin kept to himself.
Despite what the people thought, King Arthur was found of Merlin, but he never showed it. The young dragon could see why. Merlin would do magic for the little dragon. He would tell stories to the young dragon of how life used to be. Slowly the two became close friends.
Now that this young dragon was standing there watching his family and friends collapse in pain, he knew he had to do something. He flew to Merlin. Merlin promised to help on one condition. The terms were set and the two set out. Merlin and the dragon weren’t the only one heading for the dragon’s lair; the knights of Excalibur were also. The two got there just as the knights were confronting the dragons.
Merlin yelled out a spell and both sides froze. “This war is over! The dragons of Kakardesh will live in another area of this world and the humans are not to bother them!” were his next words. Then he started to speak in another language. Here is what he said:
“As these dragons of Kakardesh leave this land, the memory of their presence will slowly fade away. The humans of this land will all forget that they ever were here. The dragons however will continue to remember their friends turned foe. Kakardesh will slowly heal in their new home, one that is far from here. They will have a new friend, the Phoenix. Together, these two will rule their land. The dragons will prosper.
The humans however, will not have such luck. They will go into a long drought and food will be scarce. After that, they will also prosper. Only the oldest humans will remember the dragons. They will become myths, legends in time, passed down by only those who believe. Some humans will search for the dragons but only in vain.
The dragons will only show themselves to those who believe. They will become invisible to those who do not believe. In time, dragons will devise a language that only they can speak and will forget the human language.
After centuries of living apart, one dragon will be born that can understand the human language and two humans will be born that can understand the dragon language. These two humans will believe in dragons and will have the blood of King Arthur himself. Only these two humans can find the dragons and the phoenix. Together, they will bring the two kingdoms back together, and they will live happily forever more.
Until then, the two nations will live separate and this prophecy will be passed down through the centuries until it comes true.”
It took both sides to realize what he was saying. The humans stood there confused but when they finally snapped out of it, Merlin yelled out another spell. A ball of light surrounded the dragons of Kakardesh and they disappeared. The knights ran to tell their dying king everything that had happened. King Arthur told his children to pass it down and never forget. Soon, everyone else in the kingdom forgot the dragons and only the royal family told the story.
The dragons of Kakardesh found themselves in a lovely place. They were, for the most part, healed and they felt grateful. Merlin was there and he explained what had happened. The young dragon ran to Merlin and asked who would be the one to learn the language of humans in the centuries to come. Merlin smiled and replied “They will have your blood in them. They will be related to you. Now go, tend to your loved ones and become a great leader.” With that he was gone.
The dragons slowly healed in their new land, which they called Kakardesh, after their family name. They became great friends with the phoenixes of the land and they lived in peace. The dragons continued to tell the prophecy that their dear friends had saved their life had told them. It was passed down through the ages and will continue to be passed down. The chosen one will come soon and then the two kingdoms will reunite again.
When will this time come? Only Merlin knew and he is now dead, passed on with time. The children of King Arthur told the story and it never stopped being passed down. They too believe that they day is near. Only time will tell what happens to these two kingdoms.
