I’ve come to find that recently my mind has been overflowing with frustration at the world and the entire basis of our society. Well, not just recently. Deep thinking has been one of my fortes ever since as far back as I can remember. While all the other children spent their time playing jump-rope and cars, I preferred to sit alone and battle my boredom with the sheer power of thought, developing my young mind. And perhaps it is because of the fact that I learned to be perceptive at such an early age that I am where I am now- half mad and lost in the realm of reality, which (believe it or not) has been untouched by the vast majority of people. The following are some of my ponderings:
2. Paris Hilton! Good Lord, I think I’ve accomplished more by simply graduating from elementary than Paris has in her entire life! And yet, because she is the “heiress” to some line of hotels, she’s a celebrity. Honestly, what have we done?! A girl who has done nothing but possess wealth has become the new role model for young teens. The problem is that the teen years mark a very impressionable age, for everyone is really just trying on different personalities and appeals to find who they are what work best for them. But do you honestly think with all the sincerity in your heart that a girl that carries a dog around in a bag like an accessory (which is covered in more clothes than she has likely owned her entire life- honestly I’m almost forced to believe you could fit her entire skimpy wardrobe into one suitcase!), has/had a television show making fun of people that actually have to work for a living (the majority of North America’s population, if you didn’t know…), and whose biggest legacy is a sex tape is an appropriate idol for anyone? If you said yes, then you’re one of the reasons that I’m writing this at all.
3. Society is melodramatic, especially when it comes to weight. Girls are especially under a lot of pressure to be “skinny”, and yet those who are constantly called “anorexic”. What is the need for this? I’ve walked down the street many a time while some average weighted girl strolled passed, only to hear people on the other side of the street ignorantly point and loudly announce, “She’s fat”. Give obesity a break. The people who are obese know they are and are under enough pressure already without you adding to their stress. I have, in fact, a very slightly overweight friend who cannot go through a single day without frantically hopping on a scale and completely breaking down when she discovers she has gained two pounds. And just think, no one has even called her fat. The bottom line is, the people who are obese realize that fact and they don’t need your help to point it out. They will either try to do something about it, or they won’t. Shut up and they might find healthier ways to deal with it than resorting to starving themselves or throwing it back up. There’s another “oh-so-difficult” problem solved. Which reminds me, if you think I’m just some thirty year old psychologist with nothing better to do than analyze eating disorders and obesity, you’re wrong- I’m a dirtbag teenager that has nothing better to do than analyze eating disorders and obesity.
4. And what’s with this “emo” scene? Do we honestly need a stereotype for everyone? My biggest issue lies with those people who change for the trend, and right now this one takes the cake. I can honestly and openly say that I’m a rather depressive person, and cannot deny that I have gone through my “self mutilation” phase. But emo? Honestly, if you need to prance around announcing that you’re bisexual and cut yourself as if it meant you won the bloody lottery, you’re not anything more than the nothing that you are. And yes, I may be coming across as “insensitive”, especially considering that I was once very addicted to self mutilation, but think about it. If you do presently cut yourself and not for attention, why would you announce it to the world? I’m only able to discuss my “cutting” days here now because I know what I did was a very unhealthy addiction and have taken the necessary steps to cure myself. I only hope people can learn from my mistakes. But anyhow, back to this emo thing I have no more sympathy for “emos” than I do for those people who drown their faces in make up and claim to be punk or goth.
5. Ah yes, punk and goth- the two stereotypes that didn’t originally set out to be stereotypes, and which it seems no one today truly understands. Here’s a quick thought for you; have you ever wondered why those people who dress all in black, are mean and depressed, like drinking and partying, and are satanic came to be punk or goth? News flash; they’re not! The origin, for goth anyway, had nothing to do with Satan at all. It began in the B.C. times, actually, and “Goth” was just a name for an outcasted tribe of what the majority of society considered “barbarians”. By the seventeen hundreds (the eighteenth century) it has evolved into a cult. Now, there are an awful lot of paintings from this era still around today. Take note of the fact that even artistic paintings of people on the street never seem to sport any citizens dressed in all black with big boots, hoards of dark make up, and spiked collars? That’s because goth was a mind frame, not a style, like it has turned into today. Punk wasn’t much different in that aspect. Most “punks” now look either to the 70’s and 80’s for inspiration of style, or to Green Day. The 70’s and 80’s inspired “punks” unfortunately, rarely get the attitude right, and don’t realize that punk was not expensive and aesthetic clothing, but rather plaid pants and 3 dollar shoes. As for those “Green Day Punks”, shame on you! You’re about as punk as “Good Charlotte Goths”. Bullshit. Don’t spit in my face and tell me it’s raining. Maybe the only true punks and goths left in this world are the ones that don’t even realize that’s what they are.
6. And homosexuality! Good God, who cares?! If someone prefers the same sex, why should that matter to you? It’s sick to think how many homosexuals open up to their thought-to-be close friends about their sexual preferences, only to be shot down- especially if they happen to be the same sex. Homophobia, like any fear, comes from ignorance. If homo and bisexuality disturb you, take the time to learn about it; you’re only afraid because you don’t understand. So before you call someone a “fag”, first learn about where the term came from. I, for one, am not homosexual, but cannot help feeling offended whenever someone uses the term to mean anything other than cigarette. Did you realize, before the time you last said it, that in the days where villagers burned what were thought to be witches, the logs they used to burn the witches were called “fags”? And how does that tie into relating the term to homosexuals, you ask? Well, they used to throw homosexuals onto the fire and used them as sticks to make the fire burn, thus they were known as “fags”. Think about that next time before you’re using that word to refer to anything other than a smoke.
7. And of course the topic of sexual orientation naturally leads into that of religion. Now before I even start getting into this, I’d like to say that I have nothing against religion of any kind. However, I am and always have been an agnostic. I hope you’re not easily offended, but if you are, I suggest that you just skip this last one. Anyway, I’m not sure personally if I particularly believe in this “God” fellow or not, nor am I certain of this “Satan”, either. All I know is that in my opinion, whether or not there is or is not a God, the Bible seems corrupt. Now, before you start begging Him to “smite” me, hear me out. Hopefully no one disagrees with the fact that with great power comes great temptation to use it. That is a whole other argument in itself, and one that I needn’t get into right now. If you don’t believe me, think about it. Really think about it. Now, assuming God does exist, at one point in time the church was really in charge of everything. Consider the “sins” for example. It is stated that one should not have sex until marriage. Now, back in those days there were no contraceptives, so much sexual activity would have almost certainly resulted in childbirth. Imagine how difficult life would be for the mother- to have a child with no father! Now consider the church. The church sees this issue and, knowing it has unconditional control, tells the people that sex is a sin before marriage. Thus, the people are afraid of “Satan” and “Hell”, and so the vast majority of children born would then have known parents and a family. Make sense? I think it does. You can easily disagree with me, granted you have a fact-based argument. But should there be a God, I do not believe (personally) that the Bible is valid. I’d prefer to believe in a God that sees us all as equals and loves everyone, no matter their race, color, or sexual orientation.
