Last Night

Lurking behind the cabin door
Unheard by the fire's roar
The cold of winter's night does wait
Silent and still, and harnessed by fate

Inside there is a different sight
One of warmth and untouchable might
The fire's glow upon the floor
Dancing and joyful, teasing the door

Two lovers upon a knowing bed
Their passion of years being fed
The fire's glow, the only light
Upon their last and loving night

Their love of years soon to end
A past agreement that cannot bend
She was promised to another
Her only love, this man, the other

Upon the bed, the two entwined
In a passion one cannot find
Their bodies as one; their love so true
Their souls tomorrow, will fade to blue

Their forbidden night, meant to last
But the dawn comes too fast
How they wish it was not so
How, at dawn, she'll have to go

His lips upon her snowy skin
Outside, they hear the howling wind
Disapproving of their forbidden night
The winter's cold waiting to strike

Her lips upon his heaving chest
She feels his touch upon her breast
His gentle touch down her back
The cold outside so still and black

Their bodies together, combined as one
Afraid of the soon rising sun
Their moment deep, they cannot wait
The approaching dawn brings their fate

And so upon this knowing bed
They save their love and accept their dread
The winter's dawn approaches fast
Their secret love to forever last

In each other's arms they lie
Waiting for the first sight of sky
Tears roll down her rosy face
Knowing at dawn, she'll leave this place

His fingers wipe away her tears
Those filled with fright and knowing fears
She cannot bear to leave him so
For a man she does not know

In each other's eyes they stare
Reflecting the fire's roaring glare
They know their love will not go
This secret night makes it so

Upon the horizon, dawn does break
The world outside is soon to wake
One last time, two lovers caress
As the day prepares to dress

Next to him, her breathing form
His soul prepared to sadly mourn
One last embrace they cannot lose
Long and deep, she could not choose

Outside, the light of dawn shines clear
Upon a cabin full of fear
A fire dances upon the floor
Teasing the sun behind the door

Upon a knowing bed they lie
Their passion of years soon to die
The fire's glow, the only light
Upon their last and loving night.
