June

We lay on our backs,
eyes shut against the relentless glare of the sun,
sun-creamed bodies in rows.

We smelt of lip-gloss and flowers.

We sang along to the old classics,
drank quickly-warm water,
and made plans, plans, plans;
it felt like anything could happen.

Then,
in the long, balmy evening,
we wandered into the house,
sunburnt but sated,
to watch the sun set slowly through the kitchen window
and nibble at toffee that tasted like

perfect.
