and contrary to common belief
she really is as good as she looks.

she is a snow white angel,
never having touched the glow.
golden & pure faced as she spins
and cries out heaven help me
and it will, because she’s perfect.

sacrifice and flagellation tint the shade of her smile.
her hands are shaking; all alone in this stone prison,
calling out to a god who is not listening.
she is a dusty harp, locked away from the wind & the rust
in a corset so tight she may have to stop breathing
just to ease the pain from her heart.

her breath comes in sharp, musical gasps,
and she turns again, spun up and screams,
you can take my magic but please not me.
she whispers a psalm and a prayer,
and swears she is not a gambler.
oh, light! oh, divinity!
“lady luck retreated the moment i was born.
there is nothing you can take from me
that is not mine rightfully.”

she is told to roll the dice.
and a million to one;
she loses.

bishops lurk the pews and hide behind columns.
she stops before the blood stained chessboard,
then blinks and sips wine from her chalice.
denial has never before tasted so sweet.
- my lord, my light, my love, protect me -
they carry guns, or swords,
or whatever is more appropriate to her era,
and their faces are blank
as they cross the distance to her.

as for me,
i’ll closet myself till i forget
the taste of her hair in my mouth
and all of our hand catching
“what do you believe in?”

a/n:loosely based around tori amos' iiee. once again, girl in the fireplace...written to the music of that episode because it's senselessly beautiful: "i'm not winding you up" sequence. based, loosely again, around reinette. dedicated to all the people who are angels, and yet who have been punished all the same. how can you believe in god? no offence to anyone's religion (i myself am religious)- but some people do not deserve what they get.
