Angelus at 12 Noon

(Opposite a convent.)

I hear the bells! –
They are prompt like a cuckoo clock
And faithful in proclaiming the Incarnation
Three times daily. Birds all around flutter, flying
Heavenward.

I hear the bells! –
Versicle after versicle they ring out
Above, chanting holy words.
In those moments the convent must be drowned
In chorus and contemplation.

I hear the bells! –
With the discipline of their black robes and hoods the nuns
Must huddle together in prayer. Elsewhere the world
Hurries for lunch without grace; bells are
Merely momentary.

I hear the bells! –
But the world waits for Sunday.
I, on the other hand, have my rosary beads with me;
They clang ungracefully and clumsily,
Yet sincerely. I am all ready.

I hear the bells! –
Ave Maria.
