She rocked in her chair breathing in the salt air

and she told all the young ones her story

She talked to them of the man who was her love

and gave them love's memento mori

--

She said, Sometimes the last moment won't feel like the last

and that's the danger of endings--

You think you'll come back before the moment is past

before the ended becomes the unending.

--

You think now and then that you'll see him again

That the oak tree will always stand there

Framed by the light on so perfect a night

as the night you first dreamed to dare

--

The old house will stand in that shadowed land

In the place where you first chanced to meet him

And the stars will shine down on the crumbling town

where first you found out you complete him

--

The flowers will bloom on the cold marble tomb

where first you leaned over to kiss him

and the night won't be cold in that chamber of gold

where you first felt how much you would miss him

--

You think that your heart, though you be years apart

will not break, will not ever forget it

But sometimes at the last, when you think of the past

You will find that you deeply regret it

--

She said, Sometimes the last moment won't feel like the last

and that's the danger of endings--

You think you'll come back before the moment is past

before the ended becomes the unending.

--

But now chimes the clock, his ship leaves the dock

and you staring alone at the sky

And it's now that you notice just how far the boat is

and you never said goodbye...

--

She said, You think the last moment will not pass you by

and that's the danger of endings

You think you'll have a chance to tell him goodbye

before the ended becomes the unending
