You’re worthless. Why bother living anymore?

“Shut up, no I’m not!”

Yes, you are, Roxy. She’s doing it because you never stopped her from starting.

“No! I tried! Shut up!”

She grabbed her head and shook it violently. Alone in her room, no one heard her screaming at herself. Roxy tangled her fingers into her long black hair.

Stop talking to yourself, Roxy, you sound…crazy.

“I’m not…”

Did you watch her suffer today? Did she eat today?

“No! I mean, yes! She did! For me! Don’t tell me lies like that!”

I don’t think I’m the on lying here, Roxy. Liar.

“I’m not a liar! Stop it!” Roxy hit her head with her hand, as if to knock the voice out of it.

That’s not going to work, Roxy. You know what might? Taking that handy-dandy pair o scissors to your wrists like you used to-

“No! I stopped that a long time ago! Don’t make me do it again!”

A knock sounded on her wooden door.

“Roxy? Who are you talking to? Can I come in?” The voice asks, concerned.

“Sure, mom. I’m not talking to anymore.” She let go of her head as her mother walked in.

“Is your homework done?”

Even she thinks you’re crazy.

“No.”

“Why not? It’s almost 10 o’clock.” Confused for a moment, Roxy hesitated. “Sorry, I meant yes. I heard you wrong at first.”

“Ok. Do you want anything to eat?”

“No, thanks.”

Oh, so are you going to stop eating too?

“Shut up.” Roxy said under her breath.

“What?” Her mother asked, confused.

“Nothing. I’m just tired. I’m going to bed, ok?” Her mother walked over to Roxy and kissed her on the forehead. “Ok. Sweet dreams, honey.” She left, shutting the door. Roxy lay down, squeezing her eyes shut. Slowly the voice whispering into her ear subsided as sleep enveloped her.

“Hey, Jade. What’s up?” Roxy said as she sat in the desk next to her. A pale face with sunken in cheeks turned to face her. Her extremely straight red hair hung to her collar bones. “Hey, Rox. Not much, you?”

Look at how unhappy she is. All because of you.

Roxy’s hand shot up to touch her head. “Same same. I have a little headache. After school, do you want to go for pizza and a movie with everyone?”

Daring question. Good job, acting like you don’t know.

“Well…” Jade started. Roxy could see a thousand thoughts flashing through her mind through her blue eyes. “Come on, you know you want to! It’ll be fun, I promise. Please?” Roxy begged.

“Ok…what time?” Jade sighed, giving in. “We’re all meeting at Red’s Pizza at 7. And then the movie is at 9.”

“ok.” Class started and that was the last thing Roxy heard from Jade the rest of the period.

Lunch time came around, a time Roxy loved because then she could talk to all her friends in school, and not be silenced. She sat down across from Jade, and next to Amy.

Oh look who’s not eating again today, Roxy.

Again, Roxy put a hand to her head and scowled. Amy, with her curly blond hair cascading to her shoulders, looked at Roxy with worry. “What’s wrong?” She asked, her green eyes on Roxy.

“I’m fine. Just a little headache. And I don’t know about you, but I’m starving. Jade, you wanna come with the get food?”

Acting normal again Roxy? Smooth.

“Ugh. Shut up.” She whispered to herself.

“What?” Jade asked, confused. Roxy shook her head a little.

“Nothing,” She said quickly. “Wanna come?”

Oh good. Shove food in her face and hope she eats it. That’s your “master plan”?

“Uh, sure. Let’s go.” Jade said, getting up.

“No, now stop ruining my life.” Roxy whispered to herself again. She stood up and smiled at Amy and Jade.

“So.” Jade said when they got in line. “So,” Roxy replied, a million thoughts clouding her mind. She blindly took some food and absently asked Jade if she wanted anything. It was when Jade said no that sent Roxy back to reality. “What?! Not even chocolate? You love chocolate!” Roxy exclaimed, trying to bribe into eating anything.

“Chocolate makes you fat. No thanks,”

“Then what do you want?”

“Water?”

“Jade, that’s not food. I’m asking if you want food.

“Then no.” Frustrated, Roxy grabbed a chocolate bar and went to the register to pay. She handed the bar to Jade and started walking to the table. Jade followed reluctantly, staring at the chocolate in her hand. The table was quiet for a moment, until Amy blurted out: “I aced my math test!” From then on, there was happy chatter. Every few moments Roxy stole a glace at Jade, who held the unopened chocolate bar tightly in her hand. When the bell rand to end the lunch period, Roxy noticed the chocolate bar was still unopened. As they left the lunchroom, Roxy saw that Jade slipped the bar into the garbage can, hoping that no one noticed.

This is what you’ve reduced her to.

The voice whispered softly.
