Eternal Night

By The Ultimate Cliché

Chapter One: The Message

John dashed into the barn; the Vampire had run into it just moments earlier. His Stakeshooter Mark 1 was loaded now, and gripped tightly in his right hand. Something about Mr. John S. Doe was that he was better with a gun in his left hand, and everything else in his right. It was perfect for devil hunter, because he could have a gun in his right, and a sword or stake in the other. In this case, he had a Stakeshooter M1, a modified gun he had made himself which held three stakes and shot them, in his left was a nice thick oak stake, polished a made by himself.

The Vamp had just got done sucking all the bodily fluids out of a little girl, and John was pissed. He had been searching for the god-damned Vampire for the past two weeks, then for him to show up while he was at a family reunion, that was too much. Now the entire extended family knew about his Devil hunting business. He had planned to tell them, sit down with them and give them all his reasons, but later. Now they knew, and one of his nieces was dead.

It had almost all been worth it from seeing his father’s face when he whipped out his stake gun and nearly pulled the trigger, stopping only because someone ran in the way of the Vamp. The god-forsaken thing noticed his aiming and ran like a bat out of hell towards the town, it was faster than any human, but then again, John knew how Vamp’s worked. He decided not to waste a shot, and just pulled out his Heckler & Koch VP70, shooting it in the knee.

The creature slowed down just a bit so that it was going about John’s speed, and left a trail of black Ichor, blood of the Vampires, that John could easily follow. He followed this strange trail all the way to the old dilapidated farm in which his battle against the Vampire Larnack began. The beast’s mouth and face was still in a mock sneer and covered in the blood of an innocent child. What kind of foolish Vampire would have jumped into the middle of a huge crowd in the middle of the night, John logged in his mind to never have any kind of party in the night again, and attack a child. John had developed a theory during the hunt, and it had some very disturbing ramifications.

“Another Doe,” Larnack began, “You people have begun to make me laugh.” John shook his head and pointed his Stakeshooter at him, “Okay, tell me why a Vampire would attack a child in such a public gathering. I’m sure you knew I was there, Vampires always know that I am there.”

The Vamp laughed, “I admit, I did see you there. I saw you long before, actually. I think you know why I came there?” John did, but did not want to be the one to admit it.

“I guess I will be the one to say it,” ‘you read my mind’ “I wanted you to meet me, it is very, very important.” John hated these damn Vamps. They were so god-damned smug, he just wanted them all dead, right now. He had started this life-long witch hunt long ago, but this one would be part of it.

“Shut up,” John said, holding the Stakeshooter up to his eyelevel, “Tell me now, or you die now.” The Vamp simply smiled, then laughed maniacally.

John rolled his eyes and shot the Vamp in the heart. The stake launched out with a Whoosh! and plunged itself into the chest of Larnack’s shirt. Black Ichor spilled out, and the thing erupted in a huge plume of black smoke. It was a moment before that he heard two words uttered from the lips of the now-dead Vampire, it whispered, “Eternal Night.”

John looked down on the body and found a note:

Dear John S. Doe,

My name is Larnack, and I am a Vampire. If you have this, I most likely just erupted into a cloud of Black Smoke. Good Job, you can now add one to that big old list you have back at your house. If I managed to utter two words before I died, remember them well. If not, I meant to say the two words: ‘Eternal Night’. You should remember them well, they will become commonplace soon enough. Everyone that survives past the day that it begins will say it everyday, every moment will their minds think it, every second will they wish it would simply END! But it will not, enjoy your safety during the day for now, you know what they say, ‘You don’t appreciate something until it’s gone’.

People to find:
Jane Ryder
Kim Wilson

John looked down at the note, he read it over a good twenty times in his head, trying to decipher the secrets in it. He knew that Vamps were a very mysterious peoples, in words sometimes more than others, but not always, or commonly. Their greatest ability was that of charming people, making them follow their will. John had to try to fight it, a feat that was even hard for him to accomplish. He had to find out who these people were, because clearly something was about to happen.

John seemed to be contradicting himself in thinking this, but he was not. It was a Vampire’s voice that was not to be trusted. Being dead, Vampires no longer enjoyed things like sarcasm, dry wit, and therefore never used it. They did enjoy fear in the heart of their enemy, or what they though or assumed was fear, and laughed at that, or simply festered in it. These were sick creatures, but their word was to be trusted, never in speech, but in writing it was. John had to seek out these people that were listed on the note he had found, and find the secrets of Eternal Night.

He noticed that both of them were women, Jane Ryder and Kim Wilson. He needed to find them as soon as possible.

“Lovely” he said in a British accent, which was actually quite good.
