Out of kindness came my crime

Out of childish dreams my curse

They offered me the world and I took it in its wealth

Wealth to wealth, gold to gold

So that all I touched would blaze in my glory

All I touched would die in a molten cast.

My daughter looked at me through golden eyes

Forced my name through golden lips

Fell into a golden sleep and left me to a silent – golden – hall.

Toasts to my health fell like poisoned ash upon my lips

And I drank gold

I ate gold

I broke my teeth on gold and fled in golden sandals to the river

And when I tried to drown the water grew hard and cold

Hard and cold

Hard and gold.

Dionysus spare me

Dionysus hide my shame

Dionysus curse my name

but undo what I have done.
