Mitch Brandon had been playing guitar off and on since he was about 16. He had always hoped that he could join a band or something and become famous, but the closest he came to that dream was being a guitar techie for a band that was famous.

“Mitch, is my guitar ready or am I going ot have to postpone the show because of your slowness?”Jake Conwell, the lead guitarist of the band, said.

“It’s right here, Jake. I had to run up to the repair shop in town earlier because on of the strings snapped.” Mitch said. At times Mitch seriously hatedJake and he wold have quit a long time ago if he had some other job he could take.

“Fine, it better work or you’re fired.” Jake said and he walked out to the stage where the crowd was screaming hysterically for him.

“Wow, Jake really came down hard on you tonight. I was sure he was going to fire you by the way he yelled.” Willy McNeil, who worked with the amps, said after the show when he and Mitch were packing up.

“Me too. I don’t know why he despises me so much. I’ve never done anything to him or his guitars. I mean I tune them, I get them repaired when they’re scratched or broken, and what do I get in return, treated like garbage.” Mitch was really angry with Jake. Willy knew better than to interrupt Mitch when he was this angry. Very few people had seen Mitch angry and Willy was on of those few. The reason was Mitch never got angry except for those times when he knew that he wasn’t being treated fairly or someone else wasn’t being treated fairly.

Willy had told Mitch that he would finish putting everything away for him and that he should just get a drink and cool down, and that’s what he did. Not only did he get a drink and cool off he also thought about his job. He knew that he couldn’t afford to have a job, but he also knew that if he stayed he might do something he would regret.

As Mitch continued to sit at the bar drinking his beer and thinking about his job, he heard Jake and the rest of the band come in laughing and obviously drunk. He knew Jake might be mad at him for being here and not at the hotel packing up the equipment and not having a good time, but Mitch didn’t care. Thankfully though Jake was so drunk and preoccupied that he didn’t even notice Mitch.

Mitch got up and paid for his drink. He was about to get into his car and drive to the hotel when eh saw a man in his early twenties, about his age actually, fumbling with a stack of papers.

“Mister, do you need any help with those?” Mitch asked as he walked over to him.

“Thanks. I told the band I would post these up every place in town and so here I am. Name’s Mike by the way.” Mike said as Mitch looked at the papers Mike had just handed him.

“Looking for a guitarist I see. What do you do?” Mitch said as he walked back into the bar with Mike to put a flyer or two up.

“I play the drums. Before you ask if we’re good, I’ll tell you we suck. With our guitarist, Ron, gone we sound awful, you don’t play by any chance do you and I’m sorry what’s your name?” Mike said. Mitch could tell that Mike was a talker.

“My name’s Mitch. I don play a little bit. I know enough to play a whole song.” Mitch said thinking about what he would do if he played for this band Mike was in.

“Cool. What do you do? With work and all?” Mike asked. For most people they would have been excited about telling people they worked for a famous band, but for Mitch he dreaded it.

“I’m a guitar techie for the band Rough Life actually.” Mitch said grimacing a little bit but Mike didn’t notice.

“Mitch, what are you doing here?” Jake asked, coming up behind Mitch startling him a bit, before Mike could answer.

“Getting a drink. Willy finished packing the stuff up. I needed a brake so he gave me one.” Mike said trying to keep his cool knowing that if he didn’t get out of there soon he was going to loose it.

“Who’s your friend?” Jake asked noticing Mike standing next to Mitch.

“My name’s Mike Tellnan.” Mike said holding out his hand for Jake to shake but Jake ignored it.

“Is that guy your boss? He seems really cold.” Mike said as he and Mitch walked out of the bar.

“He is in both things. I would do something else but I’m not good at to much other than guitars. I think I have been Jake’s guitar techie for about 4 or 5 years now. Ever since he hired me though we never truly got along.” Mitch said

“Why don’t you come to the audition? If you’re good you can quit working for the band or at least work for them until you have a steady job so you have some money because the band has made any money really that we can use for whatever we like.” Mike said. To Mitch the idea seemed both crazy and brilliant.

“I’ll be there.” Mitch said and gave back all but one paper, got in his car, and drove back to the hotel.
