This is just some random story I wrote the other day when I was feeling kinda bored. Cause that’s what I tend to do with my free time: I write corny crap like this. And as productive as that may sound…it really isn’t.
ooOoo
A door opens.
The blonde’s tired, green eyes swiftly darted over towards the bottom, right-hand corner of her computer screen, just as the words “Captain-Adam has just signed on” disappeared behind her taskbar. A lazy smile tugged at the corner of her lips.
“It’s about time.”
It was almost as if that stupid boy had been avoiding her or something; she hadn’t seen or spoken to him since they got home from school Friday afternoon. It was now late Sunday night, and he had yet to answer his cell and house phone (his parents were out of town though, so that was understandable), log online, or, for that matter, show any sign that he was truly alive. And the one time that she had actually bothered to walk next door to see if he was, his little sister was the one who answered the door…
She believed her exact words had been: “What am I, his keeper?!” followed by an abrupt SLAM.
She never did like that little runt.
The blonde quickly maximized her buddy list and scrolled though a long list of names until she came to the one that said “Captain-Adam” and double clicked it.
-
Lizzeh05: dude!
Captain-Adam: hey hey
-
Okay…he answered. This clarified that he was, in fact, still among the living…
Unless his little sister trying to trick her again.
Damn that girl! Well, there was only one way to find out.
-
Lizzeh05: how goes it?
Captain-Adam: oh, it goes
-
Liz rolled her eyes and laughed. That was a typical “Adam” answer; identification had been confirmed.
-
Lizzeh05: so like, where’ve ya been?
Captain-Adam: sleeping…
Lizzeh05: since FRIDAY night?!
Captain-Adam: no, i think i got up once or twice to go to the bathroom…
Lizzeh05: har har
Captain-Adam: hey, i thought it was funny
Lizzeh05: seriously.
-
After two minutes of waiting for a response, Liz wearily rested her chin against her left hand and monotonously tapped the side of her face with her fingers. Okay…so maybe he wasn’t in the mood to talk right now. She could dig it…
She leisurely lifted her right arm up from her lap and slowly finger-pecked another message.
-
Lizzeh05: hellooo? did u fall asleep at the comp again?
Captain-Adam: nooooo
Lizzeh05: so then wtf are ya doing? i asked ya a question and u have yet to answer it
Captain-Adam: wha? u did? what was it?
-
She groaned and rolled her emerald-hued eyes. She’d have to remember to smack him later.
-
Lizzeh05: never mind.
Captain-Adam: sorry…too lazy to scroll up. SO…how you doin’?
-
Okay, he was clearly trying to avoid something. The question was…what? He knew he couldn’t hide anything from her! Resistance was futile!
-
Lizzeh05: Adam…i asked you a question
Captain-Adam: look, Lizzie…I wasn’t feeling too good, okay? i told Megan to tell u, but she obviously failed to relay that message. what can i say?
-
Liz grabbed a fist full of her wavy hair with either hand and pulled. “You suck at lying, bub.”
-
Captain-Adam: soooo. YOU have yet to answer MY question…
Captain-Adam: how ARE you doing on this fine and lovely evening?
Lizzeh05: i’m kinda bored
Captain-Adam: yeah, me too
Lizzeh05: wanna go do something?
Captain-Adam: like what? its almost 12
-
The blonde stared at the computer screen incredulously. Was he for real?! They were 18 now…seniors in high school. The possibilities were endless! But, if he was purposely trying to play dumb, then she’d have no choice but to follow suit.
He was so impossible sometimes!
Lizzeh05: oh, i dunno…watch movies in ur basement or something?
There was another long pause on his end, but she decided to remain calm throughout this one. No point in getting all worked up over something she couldn’t control.
Captain-Adam: um…i dunno
She raised an annoyed, golden brow. He didn’t know? But they always hung out in his basement when they were bored! It was like their official next-door neighbor tradition! Unless…
Her eyes widened.
Had that little devil gone out and got himself a girlfriend?
Her sudden inquiry may have been a long shot, but it definitely made sense as to why he hadn’t been around all weekend and wasn’t interested in hanging out with her at the moment. The real question was…why hadn’t he told her? They were best friends; weren’t best friends supposed to confide in just about everything?
She reluctantly removed her hand out from underneath her chin and rested both of her palms on the front of the keyboard, fingers hovering over the keys.
-
Lizzeh05: Adam…
Lizzeh05: did you finally find the guts to ask Christina out?
A pause.
Captain-Adam: wha? what r u talking about?
Lizzeh05: and did she accept?
Captain-Adam: O.o…huh?
Lizzeh05: is that why u haven’t been around all weekend? why u don’t want me coming over now?
-
He started to type a response, but she quickly conjured up one of her own and sent it before he had the chance to finish his.
Lizzeh05: because it’s not like i’d be mad or anything if u had…disappointed, maybe – but ONLY because I know you could do better then a nasty bitch like her.
He stopped typing his message.
She quickly clamped a hand over her mouth and re-read what she had just sent.
“Oh shit…”
-
Lizzeh05: omg, did i just write that? oh geeze, i’m sorry Adam! she’s not there right NOW is she?!
Captain-Adam: woah, woah…Liz, just chill for a second, will ya?
Captain-Adam: it’s okay
Lizzeh05: but…!
Captain-Adam: first of all, she’s not here.
Captain-Adam: second of all, we’re not going out
Captain-Adam: and THIRD of all, i never asked her out, NOR do I ever plan to
Lizzeh05: …but
Lizzeh05: but i thought u liked her…somewhat
Captain-Adam: well u thought wrong. honestly Liz…u know I’d fill you in on something like that
Captain-Adam: but no. it’s not like that. sure, i may find her to be somewhat of a hottie, and I MAY have let that small fact slip once or twice in your presence…
Captain-Adam: but i’d never ask her out. no way, no how. like u said…she’s just too damn bitchy. AND she treats you like crap
Captain-Adam: i could never go out with a girl that didn’t like u…ur my best bud, Liz. always have been, always will be.
-
Woah, was it just her, or was Adam getting all…mushy on her? Because the last time she could recall him acting as such was the night of their Junior Prom, when her date had called to inform her – two minutes before he was supposed to pick her up, for that matter – that he had caught a dreadful cold and would not be able to attend. She never did find out whether or not he was telling the truth, but, regardless, she had been left dateless. And it’s not like she had a backup or two to take her escort’s place in the off-chance he couldn’t attend…unlike Adam. That guy had at least three or four girls on reserve; and he wasn’t even that popular! He’s was just…unnaturally good looking. Yes, that was it. However, the moment he discovered that her date had seemingly ditched her, he ditched his own, using an unknown excuse, and accompanied her instead.
It was too cute…kinda unfair to his original date, but cute. Although, that other girl was kind of a bitch, so she didn’t lose sleep over it.
A small smile crept onto her lips as she bashfully glanced away from the computer and released a bottled up giggle. Yeah…Adam was a really great guy, wasn’t he?
-
Lizzeh05: ur right. ur totally right. i’m sorry.
Captain-Adam: no, don’t apologize. its fine…believe it or not, ur little conviction actually kinda interconnects with something i’ve been meaning to tell u…
Lizzeh05: ok. what’s up?
Captain-Adam: no, not here
Lizzeh05: not here what?
Captain-Adam: i don’t want to tell u on HERE
Lizzeh05: oh. o-kaaaay, then…why don’t you tell me while we’re watching movies in ur basement? i am SO in the mood for sci-fi!
-
She sighed as she was forced to endure yet anotherlong pause.
-
Lizzeh05: earth to Adam! I repeat, EARTH to ADAM! do u copy, OVER!
Captain-Adam: yeah, yeah…i copy
Lizzeh05: good. i’m coming over now
Captain-Adam: no…i’ll come over there
Lizzeh05: but…i don’t have any good movies! Matt stole all of them when he left for college!
Lizzeh05: unless ur in the mood for a good chick flick. cause i’ve still got plenty of those
Lizzeh05: lol
Captain-Adam: no, just…just wait right there, ok? i’ll see u in a few.
Lizzeh05: hey! wait just a goddamn second!
A door closes.
(Captain-Adam has just signed off)

“What the…”
Liz stared at her the computer screen like it had just reached out and attempted to bite her nose, blonde brows raised and forehead crinkled in a combination of contemplation and confusion. She sat like that, staring as if she were in some sort of dazed reverie, for a good minute before shaking her head and typing one last quick message into the dialogue box:
Lizzeh05: ug…you douche!
This was quickly followed by a curt warning from the messenger system that said, “Unable to send message”.
“Tch. Whatever.”
Changing her status to “Not here…get over it,” the angry blonde pushed her chair away from her desk, swiveled around, and jumped up, green eyes darting around her room for something to drape over her shoulders.
Fine. If he didn’t want to discuss the matter, whatever it happened to be, online, than she obviously had no choice but to oblige and do things his way. Didn’t make his actions any less bizarre though.
Once she had slipped a thin zip-up over her powdery-blue tank top, she heard a couple of quick, sharp taps on her window. She quickly dashed across her room to shut off the lights so she could see out the window, walked back over towards the sound, and carefully peered in-between the half-closed curtains.
She rolled her eyes once they came to rest on the lone, brown-haired figure that was standing in the very center of her front lawn; he was throwing a series of small pebbles against the flexible glass of her window, obviously unaware of her half-obscured silhouette. Though it was understandable; she had turned the lights off after all.
She waved at him in an effort to get him to stop throwing the rocks, pushing the curtains aside with her free arm so that he could see her better. With his arm in mid-swing, he smiled a wide, toothy smile and waved back, dropping the remainder of the rocks into the grass beneath his feet. She rolled her eyes once more as she stepped away from the curtain, this time smirking as she did so. Why the hell didn’t he just call her? It’s not like they didn’t have cell phones…
“Cell phones are so overrated,” is what he would’ve most likely said had she dared to ask. “I like doing things the old-fashioned way. It’s more fun.”
Liz brushed the thought aside as she quietly made her way out of her room, down the stairs, and out the front door, being sure to leave it propped open as she stepped out into the chilled, night air.
Adam approached her coyly, softly clapping his hands in front of his body as he went. “Hey, hey.”
She folded her arms across her chest and smirked, blowing a couple of stray, blonde locks out of her eyes with a quick puff of air. “Hey.”
He stopped a mere foot in front of her and shoved his hands into his pockets, shifting his gaze between her eyes and his rocking feet. “Sorry to bother you like this…I know it’s late. It’s just that…I’ve got something important to tell you, and I wanted to say it in person.”
Liz raised a curious brow and shifted her weight. “It’s fine, dude. I’m here, aren’t I?”
Adam laughed. “Yeah, yeah, I guess you are.” He directed his unreadable, blue gaze back towards the ground for a brief moment before locking them with her green one. “Look,” he said after a brief pause.
She eyed him intently. Something was off tonight…but what?
“I don’t really know how to say this…”
He was looking at her differently.
“So I guess I’ll just say this in the only way I know how…”
She could tell; there was something hidden behind his penetrating gaze.
“I couldn’t exactly do this if we were still talking to our computer screens...”
Before she had a chance to register what was happening, Adam had closed the gap in-between them and gently placed his lips upon hers, wrapping one arm around her waist to pull her close and sliding the other across her right jawbone. Her eyes widened for a brief moment before she succumbed to the strange tingling sensation that engulfed her body, and closed her eyes, pressing her body against his in an effort to keep from falling over. For some reason, the joints in her knees felt like they had suddenly been replaced with processed jello.
After another minute or so, he slowly pulled away, the skin of his lips tugging as they desperately tried to hold onto hers. Her eyes remained closed for a brief moment before slowly opening them, only to find his searching them for some sort of answer to his wordless speech.
Liz opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out. At least not right away. Slowly, she straightened her legs, pushed herself off his chest, and pulled her sleeves over her hands, her gaze leaving his momentarily to glance down at her blue-hued crocks. Sure, she had always thought about the possibility of her and Adam becoming more than friends, but now that it had happened, she couldn’t believe that they had ever been anything else.
How weird was that?
“Can you do me a favor?” she finally managed to ask, directing her gaze back towards his.
Adam looked at her, perplexed, for a brief moment before replying, “Um…sure?”
She smiled a wide, toothy smile. “Could you maybe…do that again?”
His confused expression immediately spread into one of exhausted relief as he wrapped his arms around her body and leaned his forehead against hers. “For a moment I thought you were going to slap me or something.”
Liz laughed as she placed her hands on the sides of his biceps. “The thought did cross my mind, but only for a brief moment.”
Adam rolled his eyes and closed the gap between them once more, muttering against her lips: “You’re such a crappy liar.”
She squirmed in his grip, causing him to tighten his it in response.
Damn that boy…
She would so have to get him back for this later.
ooOoo
Just as a quick side-note, this girl ain’t me. I made up the screen-name first, and then, after deciding that it would suffice, realized the coincidence. Go me and my amazing smartness. XD
