And she looked at him for the last time.
He was standing with his friends, talking and laughing. She was doing the same, watching the boy from across the room. Standing tall in their caps and gowns, they were about to graduate and leave each other for the last time.
He didn't even know she loved him.
She watched him smile in the pictures, the same smile that she had fallen in love with years before. It was the same smile that she had loved every day for all those years. And it was the last time she would see that smile.
The ceremony began. He walked down behind her, then sat across from her. She starred at him the entire time, imprinting him forever in her memory. Receiving their diplomas, listening to speeches, they tried to not cry at the thought of not being together in September.
She cried she wouldn't see him in September.
Walking back down, they headed outside to take more pictures. Having to put another fake smile on her face, she acted like she was happy.
She wasn't happy.
He stood right behind her as light flashed at them, dozens of parents taking pictures at the same times. The girls linked their arms around each other, the boys standing behind them. Hugging each other good-bye, not caring if they were best friends or enemies. She was too nervous.
She didn't hug him good-bye.
Graduates slowly began to leave. Crying, walking away solemly. No one wanted to leave each other.
She didn't want to leave him.
Tears she had been trying to stop slipped down her cheeks. She walked away from the large crowd to where she could be alone, and no one would try to comfort her. She didn't want anyone to comfort her.
She wanted him to comfort her.
She tried to convince herself she didn't love him. Anything to stop the pain. Walking back to where her family was, she saw that he was still there. She couldn't take her eyes off of him.
She didn't want to look away from him.
Her mother said they had to leave. She picked up her things and began to walk to the parking lot, away from her childhood and everyone she loved. For the last time, she looked back.
He was looking at her. The same smile she had fallen in love with years ago across his face. Their eyes locked. She smiled back at him.
Maybe this wouldn't be the last time she looked at him.
Just...maybe.
