THE CANDLES AND THE WATER

Don't move
please don't say a word
the passions flared up
after the contract died

The relentless drone
of the central air
like the ghost
of a summer past
but don't move yet
don't talk yet
because I know
this can't last

But the tugging of the candles and the water
is too strong
to put down just yet
so we'll glide
and we'll slide
and we'll sleep in separate beds
until the last echo of love
is finally dead

While I roll
in and out of sleep
don't go just yet
don't shower just yet
let me treasure this
frail ex-lover's knot
frayed and frayed more each time

your naked self on me
while our passion's water
collide and slide down my cheek
my sweat and tears should
taste the same to you

So don't move
don't speak
while the central air washes over me
I'll forget that I'm so afraid to be free

just hold me
I don't know how much time we have left
when you get up to dress
I know it will hit me hard
because, babe, I'm lying
saying it's the best thing for us to do
giving up on me and you
putting on this face
watching it all burn up with grace
I've been lying
cause all I feel like doing is crying
