Husbands, a poem by Rachel Reardon
A wedding cake with two miniature men at the top
Matching tuxedos and matching smiles
And two real men admiring its beauty
Matching tuxedos, smiles, wedding bands
The wedding is over, the reception has begun
There aren’t many guests other than a few close friends
But it’s the best day of the two men’s lives
They’ve shared their first kiss as spouses
Danced their first dance as husband and husband
They both still can’t believe the day has come
They’ve traveled away from their hometown
And neither man’s parents are attending
But it’s still the happiest day of their lives
And now it’s time to cut the cake
But neither can stand to ruin its beauty
They used to think there’d never be a day
When they’d have a wedding cake
One with two miniature men at the top
They’ve taken pictures of it for their wedding album
To reflect upon how it felt to finally see that day
But the pictures won’t capture what it’s like
To get married to someone you love so deeply
Even though most of society doesn’t want you to
But the two men know those people are all wrong
Because their love is more pure than anything could ever be
And they no longer care what the world thinks of them
Because they’ll always have each other
As lovers, as friends, and now as spouses
As husbands
