Prologue

I think many things have changed for me in the past couple years. At one time, a few years ago, I would have considered myself to be like any other normal person. But I’m not normal, and I never will be.

Take the other day for example. I was walking through the park after visiting my boyfriend when I heard a girl yelling. I turned my head slightly and saw someone out of the corner of my eye. I tried to ignore her as I was used to this sort of thing. I started to walk away but I could tell that she was following me. “I’m talking to you!” she yelled. “Why are you ignoring me? If you think that I’m just going to let you steal my boyfriend then you have another thing coming! We’ve been together for two years now and we are going to be together for a lot longer!”

I whipped around to face her. She had fair skin, blonde hair that fell around her shoulders like golden waves, and her brown eyes gleamed with anger and hatred. I knew who she was. I had seen the pictures and my boyfriend had told me about her. While a jealous ex seemed perfectly normal, it was anything but. “Leslie, you have to let go of this. You’ve been following me around for two months now.”

I’ll stop when you agree to leave Shane alone.”

Shane and I are dating, Leslie. I’m not going to stop just because you tell me to.”

Shane wouldn’t cheat on me! You’re not dating him,” she cried. Like most of the people I dealt with she was confused about what was going on. It was time for her to move on and I had to help her understand that.

Leslie, you’re dead.”

What?!”

You died in a car accident a year ago. Haven’t you wondered why no one can see you and why no one talks to you anymore?”

After talking with her for a while I managed to get her to understand what was going on. Like I said, I’m not normal. How many people do you know that can converse with the dead?

It all started when my mom introduced me to my first spirits when I was an infant. My Mom, unlike me, couldn’t see the ghosts; she could only hear them. She knew I could see them and trained me as best as she could. Then, I stopped honing my gift. I forgot all about it and wiped it out of my memory. I gave up on helping spirits because I hadn’t been able to help the person I was closest to. My Mom was murdered when I was five. As I got older I saw spirits around but I ignored them. I thought my gift was a curse for watching her murder. Then, when I turned fifteen, I learned the truth. My Mom had been murdered by the man I thought was my father. With the help of my new mediator friends I finally began to accept my gift and use it.

Together, my friends and I managed to save an entire school from dying in a horrible fire. Unfortunately, it came with a price. My brother died trying to save some of his friends. I have lost so many people that I was close to that I sometimes wonder if my gift is also a curse. Maybe I’m supposed to help complete strangers but when it comes to those I’m close to, I’m doomed to watch them suffer and die. I constantly hope that this suspicion is wrong but I don’t know.

I live with my real Dad now and I’ve just found out that one of my closest friends is moving to just a few miles away. Which I’m excited about. I haven’t seen Ava since we separated two years ago when I moved back home from America. Ava’s parents recently divorced and Ava found out that her Mom moved to Australia. I can’t wait to see her again. We have so much to talk about.

I’ve made a few new friends here. My boyfriend, Shane, is amazing. But I haven’t been able to tell him about my gift yet. My last boyfriend, Trace, knew about my gift and accepted it. I honestly thought I loved Trace but I guess someone had other plans. As it turned out, Trace was dead. Along with Shane came his long time best friend Lara. They are a couple of the greatest people I have ever met. Now all I can hope is that they get along with Ava.

Well, I have to go now. My Dad just got home and he’ll want to have dinner soon so I guess I’ll write more when I have time.

Until next time,

Tru

Okay, well, if you couldn't tell, this is a journal entry. I wasn't going to post this story for a while but the first couple chapters just kind of came into my head so I had to write them. I don't know how often it will be updated but I'm going to try really hard to update at least once a week. Also this story takes place in 2006, that's two years after the first one.
