The Waters of Lethe

Fleeing to the forest, she runs...
He's broken her heart, and he'll never know it
He's living in the sunlight and forsakes the night
She knows he'll never think twice about her...

The pool beckons in a gloomy wood,
Enticing her, giving her a way for it to end
The fading she-elf kneels, looking in the
Dark, dark depths that reflect her pain
Memories come alive, brightening for
One small instant, the murky woods
Deep in her heart, she knows she's doomed
To be the Dark Star, overshadowed by all

The goblet drops as the she-elf fades
Into Lethe, Waters of Forgetfulness
Floating for a lifetime, there is a burst
Of pain as the elf-maid finally fades away
Lethe, Lethe, come take me away and make me yours
Is her whispered prayer to the water

The waters provide, transforming
The elf, whose heart of hope had long stopped beating,
Into a creature with a tail and fins
A deep breath, and the newly made
Mermaid looks at the broken shackles,
Remnants of her broken heart and lonely soul

With one last look at the now-fading light
The mermaid allows Lethe's waters
To wash over her, letting it numb her pain
Guided only by the darkest star in the sky
She's carried out to the ocean, swimming forever
In the inky depths under the still waters
As she leaves her other life in desperation and sorrow
