Discovery

by fabian cortez

I scour across an ocean

With breadth that only

God could claim his

Own, & wrath beyond

A mortal man’s

Esteem

-

Culture’s disquiet

Retains its honour

Munificent in soul,

From this new world

Yet beauty such, derisory,

For recognized

Custom

-

Not so now discovered

Within ourselves, it’s

Arrogance that crows,

Tributes to religion’s pious

Germination, engulfs without

A spiritual soil

-

So golden Icon wend

Your spell of lust,

Destruction ally all

About that’s good, to dust,

I’ll see no beauty last

As I head home

-

Aware my feet will

Never tread again

Upon this land, O

So abundant in awe

Now gone too soon

I must accept in

Dour conscience

-

Bringing there

A lack of understanding

We steeped in fear

Civilised destroyers

Of this land, to

Pay at dearest cost

As I grow old

Atone, I now cannot

-

Yet, I’m thankful to

Have seen this world

Of wonders, discovered

Something, so many said

Could not be done

-

Oh, sky as blue

As sapphire’s

Shimmering at dawn,

With birds of paradise

A multitude of colour

Taking wing, a

Myriad of creatures

Unrecognized

Until now

-

My name?

It may

Be forgot,

Yet

-

I remember it

All
