I remember my grandmother singing to me

As she rocked me to sleep in her old, wooden rocking chair.

Would you like to swing on a star?

I remember taking baths in her big tub

And getting to pick a bar of soup from her giant jar and a lotion to put on after the bath.

I remember my grandmother vacuuming and me following around

With my plastic vacuum as she went from room to room.

Carry moonbeams home in a jar?

I remember learning how to walk by taking steps to my grandmother and my Aunt

Each with a bag of gummy bears.

I remember playing with a set of stuffed bears my grandmother made me.

And be better off than you are?

I remember baking snicker doodles in her kitchen.

I remember the day she moved away and the emptiness of her house.

I wish I could be swinging on a star.
