This was a summer school assignment. A super short story, 500 ... this took FOREVER. I had such a hard time trying to minimize it into 500, it was 800 at first and I basically took out half of it. Oh well, it's supposed to be freaky and have a plot and all, I don't know. Please give me advice.

“Oh man, I’m starving! I’m gonna go grab a Big Mac.”

Rob muttered while lifting weights, “Sure…”

Grey slung his bag over his shoulder and waved, “I’ll get you one too!”

Grey came bursting into the gym, panting, “Rob!”

Rob looked up at him strangely, “What?”

“You have to come out and see this!”

He followed Grey cautiously.

The sky was bleak, the cars were empty, the houses vacant, not a breath of life.

Rob’s face turned pale, “Where is everyone?”

“Dead! Gone!”

“What happened?”

“The buggers came and got ‘em!”

“What about us?”

“We’re alive, only about to be dead!”

Rob caught Grey’s sleeve, “Did you hear that?”

“What?”

“That sound, from over there.” He whispered, pointing to the mound of cars.

They heard rustling and heavy breathing.

“A bugger!” He gasped, pulling out his gun with trembling hands.

Rob remained silent, quietly inhaling chills of fear.

The noise grew, and soon a hand visible. Grey raised the gun. Rob studied the figure as it slowly revealed itself, pale flesh, lifting itself from the burned remains.

Grey was ready to pull the trigger when Rob grabbed his hand, “Lower your gun!”

Taking a good look, Grey exclaimed, “By God! It’s a live human!” He pocketed his gun, waving, “Hey!”

The figure turned around slowly, eyes gleaming.

Rob felt himself drinking in chills again. The figure climbed down the pile of cars, finding a hearty handshake at the bottom.

“Name’s Grey, how ‘bout you?”

The figure’s eyes flickered. He answered in a sluggish voice, “Jakaslavias.”

Grey scratched his head, “Hm, funny name. Pretty long. Russian I guess.”

Rob came up, “I’m Rob.” he didn’t offer a hand.

Grey chuckled, “We thought we were the last of mankind! You know what happened?”

“You didn’t hear them?” He stared with abnormally large eyes, “The bombs?”

Grey shook his head, “Nope.”

“Then you two really are the last of man.”

Rob was curious about the remark, but Grey spoke, “Buggers did it.”

“But they’re gone now.”

Grey groaned, “I’m starving! I want burgers!”

Jakaslavias led them down the street, “I work at a Burger King, come.”

Rob snatched Grey’s arm, “We can’t trust him! We never heard any bombs!”

“It’s alright, we ain’t strangers, we’re the last men on earth! We gotta trust each other.”

So Rob followed, uneasily, “There’s just something strange about him.”

Grey pointed about, “Funny place, eh?”

Rob glanced around, “This… doesn’t look like a Burger King!”

Jakaslavias popped out of a corner and placed a tray of burgers down. “Enjoy.”

Grey gobbled down a burger hungrily, Rob hesitated, but was too hungry to resist. Jakaslavias grinned… his pale skin turning paler and paler, until it was clear, and his eyes were as huge as an orange, green and bright.

Rob stopped eating, feeling strange… the restaurant had vanished, a metallic shine replacing it.

Grey frowned at the purple substance in his hands, “Oh man, that wasn’t no hamburger…”

And that wasn’t a human in front of them either….
