Hawaiian Beach of Sunshine

The soothing calm waves lap against the shore, laying breathlessly upon the silky sand for only a moment, and then drawing back in. My hands run through the damp earth, dipping into the moist muddiness, picking it up and scrambling toward the dry land. The sodden sand drips through my hands and oozes through the cracks of my fingers. Then I pick up the dry sand, lifting it up in cupped hands, and watching as it falls soundlessly like small tears in the rain. The gold dust seeps through the funnel effortlessly and smoothly, like in an hourglass. The sand, pure sunshine solidified, was poured onto the earth to build the finest sandy beach in the middle of the Pacific Ocean.

“Here,” I almost whisper, “to build our sand castle.” Our hands caked in sand with our knees deep down into it, my brother and I work intensely, mounding this sunshine and mud on top of each other. We mold it and form it with our minds: the greatest, largest, and grandest of all sand castles. Thought it didn’t turn out as it was imagined, it didn’t matter. It was magnificent to us, our very own castle.

The sun trickled its sunny goodness into the golden sand as the day passed on, basking tanners, drunk with sleep, in browning sunlight. Within the throngs of people and bright colors, I spot my mom relaxing on a towel under the shade of an umbrella, sipping her refreshing water. The enchanting waters lure me in, and I leap over the wave that breaks on the shore, licking the sand and soaking it with its hungry saliva. When I look at the ocean, I see the sparkling sapphire mirror gleaming below the glowering light above us. The wave lurched up again and again, its frothy, soapy mouth gurgles, then dies away, retreating back but still clawing for the land.

It drew back, and I jumped in, waiting for the next wave to push me far. When it did, I tasted a bitter and salty taste, and grit, but I spat it out and clamped my mouth shut as the next tide came hurling in. I join other family members, their heads floating in the water and bobbing up and down as each wave comes through, drowning when it comes crashing down on them. My family and I breathe in the salty air, feeling the cool, ocean breeze on our faces. We’re grinning, smiling and laughing, our mouths brimming with joy though we hardly talk under the golden sunbeams, on this beach of pure sunshine.
