Chelsey's eyes fluttered open when she heard someone enter the room.
"Miss Reimer?"
She turned over, stifling a yawn, to look at the man who had walked into the room. "Reynolds?"
Don smiled wryly, "That's me."
"I thought you weren't supposed to see me anymore. That's why you wouldn't tell me your first name, remember?"
"Well, if you must know, it's Donovan. Let's get you checked up to make sure you're all clear to leave."Donovan? Why does that sound so familiar?
"To leave?" she frowned, scanning her memory since that name and the person seemed stuck in her memory somehow. She had met him before being hospitalized, and she was sure of it.
Donovoan set her folder down on the table next to the bed and grasped her wrist to take her pulse.
At his touch, she flinched and he looked down at her questioningly, "Is everything alright, Miss Reimer?"
"Chelsey," she muttered, searching his face for anything that might trigger another memory.
Those eyes. I know them...at least, I think I do. I'm not sure. It's all so hazy...Will I ever know?
"I'm sorry?" he asked will he wrote some notes in her medical chart.
"Nevermind. Can I leave now?"
"You
seem just fine," he said, glancing at her out of the corner of
his eye.
She could've sworn she saw him look at her in a
way he shouldn't have. No one should. Did he know something she
didn't?
"Thanks, I guess."
"I'll send in another nurse with your clothing in a couple minutes."
Chelsey nodded silently.
When she heard the door close, she got out of bed and walked over to the window, squinting at the sunlight. Finally she was free. Now life could get back to normal! It was only a few days into summer vacation. Everything would be fine. She'd just have to make up for lost time.
Within 15 minutes, she was out of her room, and in the main lobby with her mother. The doctor was talking with her mother about something; just a few last-minute details before she was officially released from the hospital's care. She noticed her mother frown slightly and when Chelsey touched her hand, she smiled reassuringly at her duaghter, then turned her attention back to what the doctor was saying.
"...And that's all we know for certain. Otherwise, she's in perfect health."
"Thank you for your help, Dr. Hanson."
"Best wishes to you, Mrs. Reimer. And to you, Miss Reimer."
"Goodbye, Dr. Hanson!" Chelsey waved back at him, then grabbed her mother's hand, tugging her outside.
"You still don't like being cooped up, do you, Chels?" her mother laughed, but Chelsey could tell she was distracted.
"Can I drive?" Chelsey asked.
Her mother handed over the keys, and waited for Chelsey to unlock the doors of the family car.
Once they were both belted in, Chelsey asked, "What's up, Mom?"
Her mother smiled that reassuring smile once more and patted her daughter's hand, "Nothing, sweetie. Everything's just fine. What would you like to do today? I've planned a big dinner...whatever you'd like. I also invited Xavier and some of your other friends to come over to welcome you back."
"I'm sure it'll be great! Thanks!"
After more small-talk, they arrived at the Reimer residence.
"Well, I'm going to call your father and let him know you're home from the hospital and doing just fine. I love you, sweetheart, and I'm so glad you're alright!"
Chelsey smiled back at her mother and waited till she went into the house before she let her own concern show.
What on earth was the matter? She couldn't stifle the nauseating insecurity in the pit of her stomach. Something was up, but it seemed no one really knew what was wrong. Or if they did, they wouldn't admit to it. I suppose I'll find out eventually.
After locking up the car, she went into the house and took a long, relaxing shower; letting the confusion of the past few days wash away. None of that really mattered anymore. Life would go back to normal and everyone would be content.
She stepped out of the shower when she decided she was ready, noticing that some of her muscles were slightly stiff. It must be from being stuck in a hospital bed for so long, and not being allowed to move as much as her body was accustomed to.
She toweled off then put on a soft robe. Looking in the mirror at her reflection, she frowned. After searching for a while, she gave up.
I've been away from home too long...even if it was just a few days.
She combed out her long, damp hair, then twisted it up and secured it with a clip. Her reflection smiled back at her. Yes, everything was just as it always had been.
After getting dressed in some comfortable clothes, she ran down the stairs to the main floor. The first person she saw was her little brother who she ran up to and hugged.
"Hey!" he grimaced, attempting to wriggle his way free.
"I'm so glad to see you again, Trevor!" she smiled, ignoring of his lack of desire for affection; from his sister of all people.
Chelsey laughed when he finally broke free and took off down the hall to go back to his room to play video games. Apparently the only reason he left his room these days was to grab a soda and snacks.
She went to the kitchen to get a soda for herself, grabbed the cordless phone, then went to the backyard to lay on the trampoline.
The first person she tried calling Seren, but no one answered at Seren's house. She took a sip from the bottle of soda then tried another number.
A high-pitched voice answered, "CHELSEY!!!!!! OHMAGOD, YOU'RE BACK FROM THE HOSPITAL! HOW HAVE YOU BEEN? WHAT HAPPENED?"
"Yeah, I am. I've been alright, I guess. I'm really not sure what happened," she held back a laugh at her friend's enthusiasm. "How'd you know it was me, anyway, Krys?"
"Caller ID. My parents finally decided to get it, so now I know who's calling."
"How convenient," Chelsey said, twirling a rebellious strand of hair around one finger.
"Yeah. It makes screening calls a lot easier."
"Oookay, then."
A giggle burst out, "So, how're you really? I've heard things through other girls from school, but you know how reliable rumors are."
"I've been alright. I'm really not sure what happened. Supposedly I was hospitalized on Friday night...or early Saturday morning."
"Yeah, I heard you were at a party with Seren, Xavier, and some other friends. Supposedly some college kids were there, too."
"I don't remember much from that night. What else did you hear?"
Her friend hmmm'd aloud, "Not much really. There were a couple of our friends who wanted to f-....well, you know. Hormones, and being drunk and who knows what else. They went to one of the bedrooms and found you lying on one of the beds. They said you didn't look good, so they called 911. Of course, by doing that, everyone at the party was busted. The only people who weren't were Xavier, Seren and some other guy. They left early, I guess."
"Oh. Yeah, Xavier disappeared and some other guy sat down and talked to me for a while...and that's as much as I remember."
"Yeah, who knows? It could've been anything. Seren's known for finding the crazy parties. Be careful next time, okay, Chels? We don't want another scare. The summer's barely started."
"I promise I'll be careful from now on, Krystal. Are you coming over tonight?"
"Tonight? Tonight....OH YEAH! Speaking of which, I'm gonna go get ready. I heard your mom invited over a couple guys."
"Just friends from school. No one we haven't seen a hundred times before."
Krys laughed, "Well, I'll let you go. I love ya and I'll see ya tonight, Chels! Mwuah!"
Chelsey shook her head as she turned off the phone. Silly girl. Very sweet, but very silly.
