Cherubim

Every time I pass the streets
Every time I see the sky
Whenever you look at me that way
You tell me that I’m wrong to forgo you.
You say, “You can be with no other,”
I say, “Even if I wait 20 years.”
I thought this was just the old promise of first loves
But what do I know if you just won’t let me go?
As the summer rain falls from the silver sky
I wish I’d stop passing you by
And here we both are, as if we’re promised to be
Together for all eternity
I am forever moving homeward
Even though I get lost along the way
But somehow, every time I leave my post,
You come by and take me back to you
I’ve been told I have to let you go
Even though I’ve tried time and time before
But even thinking about it once
Makes me want this even more
Do you even know what you’re doing to me?
It’s as if this love that stayed blessed me with a half-life
Because each thought keeps me rooted and takes me away
What I feel and want, no words can ever say
If there was a way we could live without interference,
May you now hear my deliverance:
I’ve tried forgoing you as I heard the wind blow
But you never leave my skin
It’s almost as if your leaving my skin will make me lose all hope
And somehow, as the early autumn leaves fall from the scarlet trees
You stay still, waiting for me to move forward.
And once I have, you take my hand and we become cherubim.
Maybe all my dreams had direction,
Maybe we were promised for always
Maybe we shall wait endlessly for what we want
But we do it gladly.
Here starts our journey homeward
Wherever that may be.
Now and again, we may get thrown off
By what we feel, and we say and do things that we regret,
But one thing that stays true is the promise of us cherubim
That each other, we will never forget.
