Author's Note: Stupid enforced double spacing ... anyways. This is a poem I wrote about Patriotism. Perhaps, not what you would expect, or perhaps it is. If there is a meaning in it, it's for the individual to find it, as I believe it can mean different things for different people.

Daddy’s a Patriot Today

My daddy’s a patriot today.

He’s left for a war a long ways away,

And I’m so happy he’s answered the Patriots call

He says he’ll be back with early fall.

He tells me it’ll seem like he left just yesterday,

And not worry, because Patriots always do what they say.

My daddy’s a patriot today.

I heard he met an enemy to slay,

And without flinching fired his rifle

Of course, only to make the other’s stifle.

For that is the patriot’s way,

Only kill those who would you, so the newsmen say.

My daddy’s a patriot today.

He’s being honoured by the Big Chief,

But today it’s not a medal, only a wreath

Something that will give daddy much grief.

But he’ll never act that way,

He’ll just be thankful for this country, my teachers say.

My daddy’s a patriot today.

He wrote a letter home that mommy read aloud,

He sounded so great, and I was so proud.

I know all his great stories will leave me wowed.

But he’ll always just modestly say,

‘My country needed me, so I charged into the fray.’

Daddy was supposed to be home today.

I know he’s there with every dog’s bark.

But I know my daddy will be home before it gets too dark.

But in case he can’t see, I’ll just leave the lights on as a mark.

But mommy says to stop, because daddy’s gone away,

But I know he’ll be back, because Patriots always do what they say.
