Watching his life pass, he stares out the window

Waiting for something that he'll never see

The tears in his eyes, the pain that he won't show

Leave me wondering just what it could be

--

What's so important, that he can't forget it?

What's so important, he'll let his life pass?

His pain would escape, if only he'd let it

What's so important, he'll let it amass?

--

What's so important, he'll give his world for it?

What's so important, he can't live a day

Without it? Today and all the days before it

are leaving him empty and passing away...

--

What does he wait for? I still can't imagine

What could leave a person so utterly dead?

It's something consuming, without and within him

That tore out his heart and left patience instead

--

Whatever it is, I know it's never coming

He's been gone so long, that he can hardly see

That, whatever his cure and the pain that it's numbing,

It can't stop the sorrow his choice guarantees

--

What does he wait for? I know it's not coming

God can give him forever, but can't guarantee

That the thing that he waits for, the thing he's becoming

Will make him as happy as he thinks he'll be.
