Prologue
A city that calls for blood, that wavers on the very edge of destruction. No one comes out when the sun goes down knowing if they do their life’s will be short. Everyone fears what lurks at night knowing there are things out there that the mind could never wrap it’s self around. Things that watch you from the shadows waiting for the opportune moment to attack taking you for a ride that say it’s a nightmare. The city’s name is G.A.D. that seems to describe the city perfectly.
When the sun goes down the city closes like clockwork, to leave the city to the last escaping light of a setting sun. No twenty-four hour drive through or drug stores, just the silence of the city. The only people who are out at night are either very brave or really stupid.
The schools have strict curfews that make sure you are in your dorm before the sun goes down. The thought of having a city close so easily is strange but after the sudden deaths and disappearances of people, they decided there was something more out there instead of the same insane prowler that murders people.
“I’m leaving.” Emily said in an emotionless tone as she walked up to the old oak dinning table by the door. She grabbed her black purse and a lighter as she looked over to her left where her room mate was standing in the kitchen. Emily did not care that her roommate Violet was going to object. Emily slid on her shoes then slipped on her black leather coat sticking the lighter in her pocket. Her gray eyes locked on the doorknob as she just stopped there for a moment.
“You’ve got to be insane!” Violet argued as she stood in the archway of the kitchen as she watching Emily pull out a little vial out of her pocket, popping the lid and chugging the potent elixir then putting it back into her pocket.
Emily unlocked the first lock only to have Violet protest. “Emily, don’t go out there we just started school. I don’t know what’s with you. After that fall you were never the same. You’re going to put yourself in a dangerous spot and I won’t be able to help you.”
Emily unlocked the dead bolt as she opened the door.
“Stop!!” She yelled as Emily walked out the door shutting it behind and started down the dorm hallway. The hallway smelt of old carpet mixed with mold. The hall lights flickered dimly as she headed toward the end of the hall.
“Emily go back to your room.” One of guards ordered as he stepped in front of Emily sticking out of both of there arms. Emily didn’t stop, she continued to approach them showing no waver in her walk. The guard tried to force her to backtrack by stepping towards her.
“Turn up the volume baby,” was the only thing she said as she continued toward the guard, which made his resolve waver. Then his blue eyes locked on her gray eyes, which struck fear into his soul making him step back quickly.
Emily walked pass the guard to only see the other guard out of the corner of her eye blocking the stair well. Her step fell silently on the old carpet, as she paid no attention to him. Emily reached the end of the hall where there was a sliding window.
“This is the third floor, are you insane!!” He yelled unable to move as he watched in horror. Emily opened the window letting the dark maroon curtains blow in the night air as she climbed up on the ledge.
The dorm mother ran down the hall ‘til she reached the guard staring in shock when she saw Emily standing fearlessly on the ledge. “Emily! Stop if you jump you’ll die!!” She screamed only to see an ominous smile curve Emily’s lips as she quit bracing her hand against the window and leapt out.
They ran to the window to see Emily’s black hair flow like silk as she hit the ground. The dorm mother’s scream pierced the night air sharply.
