I was waiting in line at the hotdog stand
when I saw them. It was their fragile bones
I noticed first. They both looked so delicate. They
wore matching gold earrings that flashed in the
sun. Their feet were bare and sandy and their
toes were painted a brilliant shade of neon
blue. Cousin made a comment about fags and
fairy boys so I kicked him in the shin
and hoped they weren’t close enough
to hear. The man in front of us had a lot of
kids who wanted pretzels and snow cones
and hotdogs with everything, please
so I turned around and pretended to watch the
ocean. The boy and the girl were sitting on
the stairs leading down to the beach. Their
sharp knees were touching and he drew polka
dots on her hands with a black marker.
Their wrists looked too skinny and their
cheeks looked too sunken and she leaned in
to kiss him and I bet she tasted salt on his lips.
When she pulled back, I could tell from
the look on her face that he was flavored with
sugar, sweet crystalline beautiful melted sugar.
Cousin grabbed me angrily by the arm and
twisted me around to face the vendor. With a
stutter, I ordered a plain hotdog and a diet
pop. I glanced over my shoulder as Cousin
paid but the boy and the girl were gone.
