Wings of An Angel

by, Samantha Lee White

Slash. Kai, an angel. Rei, a devil. A love forbidden on two planes. To stop this love, the angel council orders that Kai is to lose his wings. Lose his memory of Rei, and be reborn in the human world. When Rei finally finds his lover again, what will be there to greet him? Are Kai's memories lost forever... or will the right stimuli bring them back?

The village was dark, night had fallen many hours before. Flickering torches outlined the gravel roads, distorting the shadows. The firelight made the building larger, taller, and fade into the shadow easier.

Inside one such building, the lighting was the same. It was all the same. The only difference was that the lights were still flickering, even after the night had cozied in for a few hour's darkness. Every house had torches on the inside, only more than the streets. Closer together and fewer between. It was easier to distinguish between the night and dark-coloured objects. With little guess work people's features could be identified.

Two people sat at the table in the kitchen of the house. Pale candlelight danced on the walls around them, illuminating and shadowing everything. A cup clanked as it was picked up. "I'm not kidding, it's serious stuff," A soft, male voice said. The other person, also male, simply nodded and took a long drink from the cup. "You're not taking me seriously...," The soft voice whined.

"Kai, I am taking you seriously," The other man said, putting the cup down on the wooden table, ignoring the unmistakable clank of wood hitting wood. "You're over-reacting, that's all. You yourself said that you were only passing by the door when you heard the council."

"Reeeiiii! You're too calm!! For an angel, the loss of wings means the loss of memory... I'd have no choice but to forget you... Forget everything that's happened to us, and live in the human world...," Kai trailed off, tears forming in the corners of his metallic blue eyes.

"Kai, calm down. Come over here and calm down," Rei said, motioning for the small angel to come sit next to him. Once he had, Rei threw his arm around Kai's shoulder, "All I'm saying is you could have been wrong. Maybe you were mistaken, you're not the only one with the last name Kiseki up there."

"But--," Kai began to protest, but was cut off by a quick kiss from the other man.

"Even if you forgot me, I wouldn't forget you," Rei added, smiling seductivley.

"But Reiii, Demon's aren't allowed in the human world," Kai reminded the green-haired demon.

"And yet, humans walk on our planes freely. It's well past time they were payed a visit," Rei replied cockilly, hand stroking over the feathers of Kai's wings affectionatley. The angel never concealed his wings, never. Giving in to Rei's advances, as he always did, Kai allowed himself to be ravished by the other man. Right then and there, on the kitchen floor. Hey, if it was going to be his last day knowing that Rei was his lover, he might as well make some love.

-----

The morning found the silver-haired angel back in the heavens. Rei had seen him off, knowing his anxiety. Taking another deep breath, Kai returned to acting as though he was listening to the council chew him out. As he had dreaded, it really was him that they had been talking about.

"--ki. Kiseki, Kai. Were you listening?? You're going to get a chance to redeem yourself--" Kai looked up hopefully at that, but his hopes were shot down as the head of council continued, "--in the human world. You will have no memories of that demon, or even if the Heavens truly do exist. You will be judged on what you do in your human lifetime. Are we clear?" He stopped, looking at Kai.

"More clear than I want it to be," Kai muttered, looking at the floor.

"Good. Then, guards, you know what to do. Take him away," The head of council said, packing up. The rest of the council had already left. "You brought this on yourself," He said, brushing past Kai as he walked out the door.

"Come with us," The guards said, dragging Kai out another door.

"And I have much of a choice... you've got me by the throat," Kai muttered, trying not to choke on lack of oxygen.

"Oh, shut up. You should have known, loving a male... a demon at that," Another guard said. A female guard. If Kai remembered correctly, it was the same girl that had tried to win him over a few years ago.

"... Can't you just let me go??? I'll run off... won't return.... you won't have to worry about us.... we'll leave....," Kai started talking feverishly as they neared the room. The room that was used to torture demons for information, and remove information from the opposite kind. He had never liked going near the room, and he sure as well didn't want to go in it.

"Hah! As if. Then we'd be in trouble. We're not all saints and halos, y'know," the female guard said, opening the door.

"Letmego!!! Pleeeeaseee... Don't do this! You don't want to do this.... just, just let me go!!!!" Kai continued, struggling against the guard's arm.

"No." Throwing Kai to the floor, knocking the wind out of the small angel, the guard kicked the door shut in the same breath.

Regaining his own breathing, trying to calm his racing heart--and mind, Kai tried again. "I like my wings...." He began, earning a weird stare from both guards. "They're soft... effective....," He paused, thinking. "Couldn't I keep one of the plummel feathers?? I'll shut up if you say yes."

"You'll shut up after we remove your wings," The girl said, picking through some of the equipment.

"Plummels don't hold mem'ries... Kerri, why can't you let 'im jus' keep one?" The man said, watching Kai, who hadn't made a move to escape yet. Unlike all the others that he had brought in here.

"Eh, fine. You can keep one plummel feather. Pick it and turn your back to me," The girl, Kerri, said. Her instrument of removal was a paper-thin sword. Not at all flimsy, but lethal on ten different levels.

"Thank you," Kai murmered, taking a minute to find the feather he thought was best. Wincing, he pulled it. Wordlessly, he turned his back to Kerri.

Emotionlessly, Kerri sliced off the left wing wing first. It fell to the floor with a sickening 'thud'. A pained cry escaped Kai, and he doubled over, his hand attempting to stop the blood flow. Taking no notice of this, she sliced off the second wing, estimating the time it would take for Kai to fall to the ground, unconcious. Twenty seconds, eight longer than she had thought. "Clean this up." Kerri said, throwing the sword to the man who caught it deftly, and then leaving the room.
