Wings of An Angel

by, Samantha Lee White

Slash. Kai, an angel. Rei, a devil. A love forbidden on two planes. To stop this love, the angel council orders that Kai is to lose his wings. Lose his memory of Rei, and be reborn in the human world. When Rei finally finds his lover again, what will be there to greet him? Are Kai's memories lost forever... or will the right stimuli bring them back?

"Trust the word of one. Demons know damn well what love is," An icy voice said, sounding from behind the angels. "More so than your kind will ever be able to."

Hirai... Good timing. Rei thought as he was released, crumpling to the ground as though he had no skeletal structure within him, coughing and wincing as he fell. "Kerri, I suggest you leave my brother alone. Your holy laws have no power here. The next time I see you, I will kill you," He ground out, bright green, cat-like eyes glaring at the winged back of the angel as she stalked off, engaging in the unholy practice of swearing under her breath as she retreated.

"Good... Good timeing," Rei managed to choke out, amidst his coughing fit.

"The hallway reeks of Holy Water, no doubt she doused herself in it... Yeesh, that's gonna take a long time to heal," Hirai commented, reaching a hand out to touch the hand-shaped burns.

Rei smacked his hand away, "Don't touch." He growled, earning a sympathetic smile.

"I'll get the nurse," Hirai said, making to leave but stopping mid-motion. "Or rather, I should help you into bed. Unless you like the floor," He chuckled at his own joke, not giving Rei time to protest as he picked him up and brought him over to the bed. "Now, I think I'll go get that nurse." With that, he was gone.

Rei coughed, wincing. His neck ached, and he was vividly aware of a painful throbbing sensation in his wrist. He wouldn't have put it past that bitchy angel to have broken it. Kai had once told him that the angels weren't all saints and halos. Encountering Kerri for himself, he was quite ready to second that idea.

Minutes ticked by at an agonizingly slow pace. It seemed like it was years before the door creaked open, revealing Kôrin and Hirai, both weighted down with an armload of medical supplies. Rei smiled goofilly, and wasn't sure if he had obeyed his impulse to wave at them or not. The room and two other demons swam before his eyes. He realized that it was his internal healing mechanisms attempting to turn on.

Too bad that the last time that angel had appeared she had messed with them. Rei sincerely doubted that they would be any help. Knowing that sadistic chick, she probably altered them to harm him even more. Seemed like something she would take pleasure in doing.

Hazilly he watched Kôrin work. Some sort of soothing salve was smeared on the throbbing burns on his neck and wrist. It took a few moments for the pain signals to reach his mind, but when they did Rei realized that one of the two must have moved his wrist. He could feel smooth wood strapped to it, and guessed that it had been placed in a make-shift splint.

A guaze bandage was wrapped around his neck, and then Kôrin left the two of them alone.

"How you holding up?" Hirai asked, sitting gently on the bed. He was the only one that new what had happened to Rei before the Angel Council had convinced the most of the universe that he was insane.

"...I found Kai...," Rei answered hoarsely after a long silence. His voice sounded distant and not at all like his own.

"That's great!" Hirai held Rei's enthusiasm for him, since the green haired demon seemed to be a little out of it at the moment. "As soon as you get out of here we'll go check him out," Hirai said, standing up. "For now, get some sleep. I'll be back tomorrow."

Had it not hurt to move his head, Rei would have nodded. Instead, he settled for a small "mmph" noise as Hirai left the room, taking the lights with him as he did so.

Well into the middle of the after lunch class, Tsuni walked in, followed by her twin brother, Tsuta. The teacher simply nodded as they returned and took their seats, then resumed teaching.

The school day was far too boring and average, as it always was. Finally, the last bell tolled and they were freed. At least, for a few hours until they had to do it all over again. At least tomorrow was Friday. Survive, and there would be a glorious fourty-eight hours of un-educational learning. Like, playing the computer, surfing the web-- Or battle with Tsuni for the playstation; or on it.

"HATERU! TSUTA HATERU!!" A voice yelled, pounding footsteps catching up to them.

"Uh, yeah?" Tsuta said, turning his face to the boy who had called his name.

"Do you remember me?" He asked, watching Tsuta like a scientist would an alien; with shocked and horrified awe.

"Uh, why wouldn't I? You're Hikaru Minato, Mr Minato's son. We're in History together..."

"Oh. So you recovered completely. I was surprised to hear that they released you from the hospital last month... And you're all ready back in school," Hikaru rambled.

Tsuta rolled his eyes. "I've been getting a lot of that lately... I hate the girls that say it's a miracle, though. All I did was get hit by a moving van, fall into a two-year coma... flatline for a minute and then somehow wake up. Plenty of people have done it," He shrugged. "And one day they'll find an explanation for it."

"Oh yeah. They've all ready found an explanation for it," Tsuni said, pushing Tsuta. "Miracles, duh!"

"You can keep your demons, angels and miracles junk to yourself. There's more logical explanations." With that, Tsuta quickened his pace and made sure to stay a few feet ahead of them.

"Yeah, right. And that's why you study astrology," Tsuni muttered. She turned to Hikaru, "Don't mind him, he gets like that whenever we bring up the subject of his coma. He doesn't act it, but I think he's totally pissed that he missed two years of his life, and now has to scramble to catch up to the rest of us."

"Uh... Oookay. See you tomorrow," Hikaru replied over his shoulder, walking back towards the school. He lived on the opposite side of town from them.

Hours later, the family sat around the dinner table. Sighing, Tsuta pushed the food around his plate. Tsuni was telling their mom about their stupid art project. Which was: If the school was turned into a comic book, what would it look like? He had just thrown a note across the room to Ritsuka, rather than take the teacher seriously. His artistic inclination was less than negative zero.

"--ta? Tsuta, are you all right?"

Looking up, he saw that it was his dad. Why was he bothering him? Oh, he had just put his elbow in the center of his plate. "Uh... yeah. Can I eat this later?"

His dad nodded, looking at his mom, who looked like she wanted to say something but instead added a stiff nod, seconding his father's decision.

With that, Tsuta retreated from the table and sought the sanctity of his own room. Where he would be "studying". Yeesh, his parents were so stupid-- If he studied he might actually get above a seventy-five and ruin his perfect ten-points-above-failing average.

"Rei, we finally got them to release you," Hirai whispered, sitting on the bed again. It was either late friday or early saturday, all depended on the way your internal clock figured the time between time.

"Great." Rei's reply was hoarse and laden with pain as he struggled against the bedsheets to sit up.

Aiding him slightly, Hirai smiled. "Wanna leave now? Kôrin all ready brought your things back home... If I didn't all ready have Akegata I'd ask that gal t'be my wife," He joked, earning a chuckle.

"Well, let's go." Rei fastened the sling over his shoulder with his teeth. He still hadn't recovered from the attack. If his body had been the same as when he had Kai, the burns would have faded into memory in less than an hour.

Watching Rei, Hirai sighed. Long green hair fell over his shoulder as he studied his little brother closely. "You want to see him, don't you." It was a statement, not a question. Rei nodded. "I checked into that Hareta fella, or whatever his name was, found his adress. If you're up to a little travelling, we can go there now."

Rei's eyes lit up. "Really!? Let's go!!" He shouted energetically, jumping up out of bed.

Hirai laughed, he couldn't help it. It was amazing to see what the words "we could go there now" did to his little brother. "You're going to have to hold onto me. Even if I did think you were well enough to travel solo, I still wouldn't trust you. Our kind's never been fused with human DNA before." Hirai motioned for Rei to come closer to him. After some grumbling of choice words Rei complied and grabbed onto Hirai's waist. A moment of concentration on the elder demon's part and they were in Kai's, no, Tsuta's room.

"Kai," Rei breathed, falling to his knees at the sight of him. Tsuta, Kai, was sleeping, a peacefully familiar expression on his face. "I've been searching for so long..." His voice was soft, sweet and sad. It faded as he crumpled to the ground; exhausted.
