Chapter One

How would your parents take to knowing you’re gay? Would it be a pretty thing or ugly thing?

-Not too well would they? That’s how my family is; they resent gay people and they detest when I say it’s their freedom to do as they please. It’s a wonder they didn’t know sooner but than again, I’m glad they don’t know yet. I’m pretty nervous having them know something so deep, so dark and twisted. It would probably break my mother and my father would hate me until the day I die and past that.

I slapped my hand against the lockers, feeling guilty that I had forgotten to do my homework (third time this week) again. I grunted and flung the metal door shut, relishing the bang it left moments after meeting more metal. Our English professor was insisting we do either an autobiography on our lives or write a short story. I chose the second one, finding it was easier to write a short story of only 29,000 words or less with half fiction and half-truth.

I gathered up my heavy book bag and slung it over my shoulder, getting ready to ignore the taunts those stupid jocks are about to hand out. I brush past all the cheerleaders as they posed and got ready to do their stupid little cheers. One of them bounded my way and placed a feather light kiss on my cheek. I smiled and turned towards the girl’s way. Miranda was the loveliest girl on the cheer squad and my best friend. She gathered my large hands in between her smaller ones and jumped up and down, ignoring the other cheerleader squabbles behind her.

“Oh! Oh Langie, my big bro’s coming home tonight! I’d like to having you over for dinner and don’t think on saying no.” she said, wagging her finger at me. I grinned and nodded, allowing her to step away from me. She smiled even wider and bounced off towards the disapproving girls behind her. I waved and she returned it after giving one of the other girls a very harsh slap on the cheek.

I marched down the rest of the concrete stairway, noticing the jocks had already run off to football practice. I passed the other gorgeous girls (but I hold not interest in them) and passed some of the hotter males the girls ogle over. I had to admit I found myself staring after them as well. I stopped in front of a little black Honda Civic, chrome hubcaps and dark red and orange flames on the sides. This was my baby, my pride and joy and it was all mine!

I slid inside and stuck the key in the ignition, ready to open all the horses and go thundering down the pavement. As I started up the car, a tap on the window caught my attention. I stared hard at the male standing next to my car, nervously biting his lip. Who was he again? Oh right, David Michaels, a freshman in junior high. Our school system is quite stupid. I’m a junior and just getting into High School. Sophomores and freshmen are still in junior high while juniors and seniors are in high school. It’s quite confusing but I guess it works out, considering our high school is very, very small.

I rolled down the window to stare at David. His hair was partially slicked back but a few tuffs stood up and pointed towards the bright sky. “Uh, hi there.” I said, giving him a funny look, wondering what the fuck he was doing.

“Uh, sorry to startle you like that but remember the whole peer tutoring thing you signed up for?” he asked, rambling on and I was already thinking ‘blah, blah, blah’ as he continued. I finally let out a loud sigh and he stopped in mid-sentence, looking beet red.

“You the guy I’m supposed to tutor then?” I asked gruffly, feeling rather insulted by this. He nodded sheepishly and adverted his eyes from mine. “All right, I guess I’ll tutor you today. Jump in and I’ll take you to my place to do some work for day.” I said casually, not wanting this little twerp around me. He nodded and fumbled with his bag for a second before opening the door slowly and sliding in as well. I glanced at him sideways, noting how fragile he looked for someone of his age. I revved up the engine and was peeling out of the school parking lot, ignoring the stares everyone gave as I drove by. I watched as he gazed of the window, his sea green eyes glancing at everything as I sped by. Nice homes passed our eyes and I watched as his eyes grew wider as I pulled up into a long winding driveway.

“This is where you live?” he asked as I shut off the car. I nodded and was thinking ‘Duh! Of course you blasted idiot!’ as I got out of the car. He did the same and slung the bag over his broad shoulders. For someone being only 15, he was way cute. Wait, was he even 15?

“Come on, mum’s going to be home soon and I don’t like pissing her off.” I said, leading the way up the stone walkway. I unlocked the door and kicked off my shoes, telling him to do the same. He complied and shut the door behind him. Instantly Granny greeted me, our very old but very wise, housekeeper and nanny.

“Good afternoon!” she chirped, adjusting her wire rimmed glasses higher on her nose. I smiled widely and allowed her to give me a bear hug and she stepped back afterwards to stare at David behind me.

“Oh my, who’s this!” she exclaimed, gently pushing me aside to grab David up in a hug. He turned red and allowed her to wrap her frail arms around his almost feminine form. I nearly laughed at how he looked right about now but I wasn’t about to embarrass the poor kid anymore.

“Granny, this is David Michaels. He’s my new student for my tutoring sessions.” I said, grabbing his wrist and pulling him from her grasp. She laughed and mumbled something about she had a batch of fresh chocolate chip cookies in the oven. I drug him up the stairs, ignoring his protests to slow down just a bit. One of the best things in my crib is that the full 2nd story is mine (which means the whole upstairs is mine!).

“Umm.. How come every calls you Lang when your name isn’t Lang?” David asked, yanking his wrist from my grasp. I glanced over my shoulder and sighed.

“My name’s Roosevelt Lang Harrison but to use my first name.. No thanks!” I said, laughing and waving my hand. “Besides, all of my friends have always called me Lang instead of Roosevelt.” I explained, pushing open my door and motioning for him to come in.

“Wow, nice room,” he commented, looking at everything in awe. I shut the door and nodded, watching as he sat down at the desk. He swiveled around in the chair to face me for a minute. Then a queer smirk played at the corners of his lips before he stood up and started towards me. His near six-foot form came in close contact to mine as he leaned down towards me. Then he gently ran three fingers along my jaw line. I gulped and managed to push him slightly to unbalance him before fleeing from underneath his arm.

“Get out, freak.” I hissed, feeling my heart pounding loudly in my chest. He smirked and slowly ambled back towards me. I flattened myself against the wall and waited as I felt his lips gently pass against mine.

“Don’t worry, I’ll be back.” David whispered, hurrying out of my room. I gulped and rested my weight against my desk, feeling my heart thudding loudly in my chest.

Dinner was strained that night when my parents got home. Both mom and pops had a rough day at work and were a little tense and cranky while we were eating. I tried my best to keep them from fighting but in the end, I lost.

“Oh, so now you think your job is real hard, Wes!” Mum shouted at pops, her normally calm voice reaching a higher pitch and slammed her fists onto the table. The silverware and plates clattered and pops gave her a nasty look, meaning he was slowly but surely about ready to start yelling soon.

“Look, our jobs are stressful,” he started out but Mum only took offense to that and stood and hurried out of the large dinning hall. I sighed and placed my fork next to my plate, waiting for pops to say something.

“Sorry about that son, but some things,” his voice trailed off and for the first time I noticed the grays in his hair and the wrinkles creasing his forehead and around his mouth. He lifted his wine glass and took a long swig of the red liquid, closing his eyes tight against his sunken cheeks. I closed my own eyes and heard the clink of the glass meeting the marble tabletop. Against my wrist my watch buzzed, letting me know it was 7:30. I heaved a sigh and stood up, flinching when the chair scrapped the floor. Pops looked at me with a question resting deeply in his dark blue eyes and I opened my mouth slowly.

“Miranda invited me over to eat with them. I know I just ate but I’ll be hungry again by time I get to her place.” I said, pushing the chair in and going around the side of the table to pops. I leaned down and gave pops a kiss on the forehead before giving his shoulder a squeeze and practically running out of the door. I could almost hear him snicker as I dashed out the front down and down our sidewalk towards my car. Night hadn’t totally fallen yet as I slid into the driver’s seat and my eyes rested on the purple, pink and bluish sky as I started my car. The quiet rumbling let me know the car was ready and I slowly drove out of the place. I switched on the radio and some lovely music greeted my ears.

I’ll give you the sun

The rain

The moon

The stars and the mountains

I’ll give you the world

And all that you wish for

And even more

Girl, I love you more than you could know

And that’s for sure

I’d climb the highest kill

Cross the widest sea

Nothing could discourage me

And I pray that you will be

Always there for me

Forever more

Ready or not

I’ll give you everything

And more

All that I’ve got-it’s yours

I’ll give you everything

All you’re looking for

I turned the volume dial up a bit more, letting the sound of the soft music fill my head. I drove along, past the large houses that marked my road and turned onto a smaller, bumpier road leading to Miranda’s. Her family is just as rich as mine but they live out in the country. A real peaceful place and very beautiful and pleasing to the eye. I hit a pothole and I grimaced, feeling my backache a little from the jolt. I mumbled incoherently and turned my eyes back on the road. As I turned the first curve, bright lights intruded into my car. The car was driving slowly and from the looks of it was Miranda’s car. The numbers burned in my mind as I read the plates and I slammed on the brakes, flashing my lights a couple of times to get her to stop.

Her lime green car slid to a stop and she rolled down her window. I rolled mine down as well, noticing that in the dark, her eyes looked a little reddish like she was crying. I gulped, wondering what was going on and if she had tried calling me.

“What’s wrong?” I asked, shifting my car into park. She sniffed loudly and covered her mouth to let loose a wheezing cough. I waited patiently, she could have an attack any time and I’m sure she didn’t have any of her medicines with her. Panic attacks were her main thing, something I was nervous dealing with whenever she has one.

“I..” she gulped, her nose dripping snot. “My bi.. Big brother in hospital. Dr.. drunk driver crashed into him head on.” she choked out, tears springing down her face. I frowned, wondering how bad it was to make her cry like this.

“I’ll follow you,” I said, revving my car up and she nodded, peeling out. I followed suit, taking my eyes off the road to remember the words that David whispered before leaving my house.

I’ll be back,” his chilling voice whispered in the back of my mind.

Author's notes:

This idea is taken from the original story. But there are many things that have been changed around. First off, characters' names are different, along with plot twists. I may/may not use the original twist but you'll never know unless you read on.

Also, the song that was used towards the end of the chapter is called "Ready Or Not" by After 7. This group is a very good group of 3 guy singers. Their songs are soft but wonderful!

Enjoy!
