Only You
Chapter Four:
David was still rambling as I pulled in front of my house. Somehow, after he kissed my fingers, managed to drive safely to my house without causing an accident. I shut the ignition off and waiting. I could see both of my parents’ cars in the driveway. I swallowed, that wasn’t a good sign.
My mom was a CEO at a very important company, which meant she was hardly home. My father on the other hand, lived nearly a hundred miles away. He traveled a lot, and his boyfriend followed him. That was the reason why mom and dad got divorced. Mom kind of found out about dad being gay and flipped out on him nearly fifteen years ago.
“Your ’rents home?” David asked quietly, jerking thumb towards the two cars. I just nodded, swallowing again. He raised an eyebrow at me and I opened my door, glancing towards the door. He followed suit and stood up, his height towering above me. I snorted and pushed back my bangs. Whatever the two were doing here meant that there was gonna be bad news.
My gaze floated to the living room. Mom stood at the window, glaring out towards us. I matched the glare and stepped forward, motioning for David to follow. Then her gaze landed on David and it hardened. I groaned inwardly and David stood beside me.
‘Oh crap,’ I thought, ‘this must be what they wanna talk about!’ I panicked as we moved forward. We were now standing on the front porch and I couldn’t bring myself to open the door.
“Don’t worry,” I heard David whisper softly and his fingers curled around mine and gave a gentle squeeze. My heart gave an excited lurch and I glanced up at him, smiling. “Now, ready to go in?” he asked and I felt my face heat up. I opened the door.
“Welcome home son!” my father boomed from the living room. I smiled and let go of David’s hand, rushing into the large room. My father’s arms were wide open and I flung myself into them. I stepped back a moment later and glanced over at my father’s boyfriend. He sat on the couch, engaged in a quiet conversation with David.
“Who’s that?” dad poked me in my ribs, smirking. I flushed when he winked at me.
“He’s just a friend!” I waved my hands around frantically, getting a laugh from my dad and his boyfriend. They laughed again and I found myself watching Cody. Something was strange in the way he looked.
“My, you’ve grown,” he commented, smiling. I smiled at the comment, giving Cody a wide smile. “But you haven’t changed at all!” Cody chuckled, giving a sad smile. I blinked, glancing at him. His hair was longer, and a bright bleach blonde (almost white if you ask me) and there were creases and wrinkles around his mouth and the corner of his eyes. I swallowed and licked my suddenly dry lips.
“Why don’t you sit down?” Cody suggested, patting the cushions next to him and David. I frowned, nodding and plopping myself next to the two. Their warmth enveloped me and I groped for David’s hand. He met mine halfway and gave a halfhearted squeeze.
“Okay,” I said, putting on my brave face. “What’s going on?” my body was shaking and David rested his left hand on my knee and my shakes instantly stopped. My dad sat in the chair across from the sofa, an intent, just upset look resting deep in his eyes.
“Well, we were hoping it wouldn’t come, or end like this..” my father started off, but stopped and shook his head, hiding his face in his hands. I gulped and my gaze traveled back to Cody.
“Well, we didn’t want to tell you until we were sure,” Cody said, taking a deep breath. “And now, we’re sure.” oh God, oh God, oh God. Don’t let my walls come crumbling down. “I have cancer; the doctors are only giving me about six months left to live.” He said, his gaze bounding to the fireplace. Fuck, fuck, fuck!
“…” I couldn’t form the right words when my mouth opened. My father’s gaze met my own confused one. “I’m gonna go up to my room now,” I muttered, standing up, still holding David’s hand. He stood up next to me, his height towering over me. I saw the chuckle in my father’s eye and gave a small smile.
I rushed upstairs quickly before anyone could say anything. I heard David’s lumbering steps behind me and I swung into the first room on the left. I panted and shut the door behind David, refusing to look in him the eyes. His body heat wrapped itself around me and I turned around halfway, watching him.
“Nice room,” he commented and I flipped on a black light. It was a fetish of mine. I grinned as everything looked neon in the light.
“Like it even more now?” I asked, smirking and brushing past his wide form. He laughed and grabbed my left arm, spinning me around. What the hell? I gazed up at him, trying my hardest to look like I was pissed. I pushed my hand against his chest and felt his heartbeat through his shirt. My face heated up and I lowered my eyes to the floor.
“Man, you act almost like a woman,” David chuckled, poking me in the nose. I snorted and pulled away from his finger but it followed me. Then his crooked smile made me laugh and I felt myself against his chest.
“Meanie,” I pulled the most childish thing from my mind. His eyebrows raised up and he let out a snort.
“What the ‘ell?” he said, laughing loudly. I laughed as well, pointing and making incoherent comments about his expressions. I faintly heard my phone buzzing in my pocket, letting me know I had a phone call. I ignored it and continued to poke and tease David.
oOoOoOoOo
He left nearly two hours later, no studying or homework finished. For some reason, I felt better having him around, just joking and talking like we did. He replaced the feelings of darkness and depression when Dustin was around me earlier in the day. I finally pulled my phone out of my pocket, glancing at the screen. I had five missed calls and nine text messages. I sighed, I was pretty popular tonight. I flipped open the phone and saw Miranda’s name; she called three of those five times. The second number was one I didn’t recognized.
‘My brother came outta surgery fine so I’ll be at school tomorrow. But my mum thinks I should move in with her when bro comes home..’ I read her message and typed back a quick response. I opened another message. It was one from the unknown number.
‘You can run and hide behind that big boyfriend of yours, but you’re still mine. I’ll make you see that soon enough so watch your back.’ I glared at the screen. There was only person who would threaten me like that. Dustin wasn’t going to back down if I ignored him. The little asshole had an older brother, a senior I think, that beat me up once. That was just last summer, when they planned to rape me.
‘Mom still doesn’t believe I got raped,’ I thought, sighing out loud. ‘At least dad believes me.’ I rolled my eyes and plopped down on my bed, staring at the ceiling. My phone buzzed in my hand, alerting me for a message. I held the phone above me, glancing at the number.
‘Hey, thanks for the awesome evening, even if we didn’t do anything. wink’ I understood quickly. Even David enjoyed the evening like I did. I smiled to myself and rolled over on my right side, pulling my knees up to my chest.
I fell asleep like that. Dressed in my khaki pants and button down shirt. And with a message that read,
‘Lang, my brother just died.’
