Any human relationship can be described as a body of water in some state. This about my ex best friend and I-- and what truly caused the rift. 'Redwood' provides a bit of background around lines 15-22, but it's not necessary. I'm not sure if I've put up any of my other dirt clod poetry. I might have to put up 'Falling Earth, Burning Stars', if I haven't already, since with the exception of this it's easily the best 'dirt clod poem'. Anyway, it's symbolic, sort of.
'People Are Bodies of Water'
I would have said we were a pond
a calm spot in my mind of rivers
or a river finally dammed
and brought to rest
after a lifetime of
its bends and rapids
for that one week
I thought those trials removed
but maybe we were a frozen river
or lake, in those late January days
waiting for the ice to break
or for one drop of rain
to hit our surface
spreading the ripples for miles
You say this rain fell from
the tree which gave me its shade
and stood before the raindrop fell
if not long enough for you to see its magnificence
You accuse it of disturbing our pond
while into it fell dirt clods
eroded from the shore
that I could see before I planted the tree
clods you welcomed in
to give you even the most unstable
of foundations
