The night was dark and cold. Fog swirled up from the crevices of the ground like zombies rising to terrorize humanity. Shadows danced through the tall grass, drifting in between imagination and reality in the dim light. A chill transcended the grassy fen, sending chills up the spine in a similar sensation to that of being watched.
"What are we doing here, Zane?" rose a voice to break the unearthly still that inhabited the field. A soft rustling ensued like the sighing of the wind as he struggled to catch the barely visible frame that walked determinedly in front of him.
"You know very well why we're here," came a gruff voice in reply. The man spoke to the first as if he was talking to a child, his tone betraying his annoyance at such juvenile questions. "We have to destroy this thing and make quick of it."
"But why?" The younger man finally caught up to Zane and watched him questioningly.
"Why would we want to destroy what we worked so hard to build in the first place?"
Zane stopped suddenly, still staring straight ahead, his jaw clenched as he tried not to lose his temper.
"Wes?" he asked through gritted teeth, refusing to look at the man. "Will you do me a favor."
"Of course! Anything!" Wes replied eagerly, his voice raising in anticipation at being asked to help.
Zane let his gaze fall until their eyes met. "Keep quiet!" he bellowed angrily, nearly knocking the boy off his feet from the force of his words. With this said, he continued on his way as if nothing had happened.
Wes stood there for a second in confusion, his brain trying to process everything all at once. Slowly, he followed after Zane, still attempting to sum it all up.
"So, you don't really want me to do anything, do you?" he asked, stumbling over tree stumps as he kept forgetting to watch where he was walking.
"Wes, stop talking," Zane sighed, rubbing his temples as a migraine began to build in the back of his head.
The two continued on through the darkness, adventurers on a dangerous plight into the unknown. Of course, they knew this territory very well by day, but what appears safe by the sun is transformed into a death trap under the moon's watch. For all they knew, they could be walking into something unpleasant, but it was a risk they were willing to take.
After another half an hour or so of walking, during which Wes talked incessantly, as was his way, Zane suddenly stopped forthright. He looked into the shadows thoughtfully, seeming to scan every fiber with excruciating detail.
