Chocolate Cherries

You’re gone

And I count the days

Like chocolate cherries in a bowl;

Wait for the last

That tastes so sweet

Like the day I will finally see you again.

You’ve gone away

And I miss you.

Lie in bed and stare at the ceiling

Thinking of everything but

The empty space beside me

Where once again you will lie.

All I have to do is wait,

But can I?

Temptation so sweet

Like sugar in coffee;

Melting away

In the bitter blackness.

How can I love you

If I cannot see you?

Cannot smell you?

Cannot touch you?

But when you’re here

I wonder how I could ever have

Doubted my love for you

Or yours for me.

Do you think of me

When you’re away?

Maybe you miss

The way I stroked your hair,

So fine and beautiful in itself.

When you walk past a woman,

Do you smell her perfume?

Does it smell good?

Remind you of me?

Because I always think of you

And how I miss your smile,

I’d give a thousand lives of loneliness

If you’d just come back home to me.
