Deon glanced behind him as he walked down the sidewalk. He was pretty sure he was being followed, but he couldn’t tell which one of the people in the crowd it was. Dodging into a hat shop, he acted interested in the window display, but he was watching the many people in the crowd. One girl stopped and looked around as if she had lost someone. She wasn’t any different from the usual girl in the crowd, dark brown hair, dressed in punk clothes, with many piercings on her body. Deon grinned to himself.

“Oh, come on, Lorain. Is she the best you could come up with?” he muttered under his breath.

Grabbing a baseball cap from a shelf, he walked up to the counter, handing the person working there enough money to buy the hat. After purchasing the hat, he put it on his head, confining the long blond hair that had a life of its own, and walked back out on the street. Deon looked behind him, making sure he caught the girl’s attention. As soon as she saw him come out of the hat shop, she acted like just another girl in the crowd, walking down the sidewalk, just happening to go the same way as Deon.

At first, he walked at a normal pace, not in any hurry, but when his follower got closer, he picked up his pace, dodging the many people swarming in the town like ants. Deon ran into an alleyway with his pursuer following. He smiled to himself as he looked over his shoulder at the girl acting like she was looking for an address in the ally he had chosen to loose her in. When she was glancing at the house numbers, Deon took the opportunity that she had given him to disappear. He turned the corner, ditched the baseball cap he had bought at the hat store, grabbing the ladder leading to the fire escape of an apartment complex, and began to climb up it. When his pursuer turned the corner, the look of surprise was on her face. She bent down and picked up the cap he had thrown on the ground. The girl walked down the alley past the fire escape where Deon was hiding and stood looking this way and that for Deon. He jumped off the fire escape behind the girl noiselessly and pulled out his sword from beneath his trench-cloak.

“Looking for me?” The girl spun around on her heel looking at Deon with the look of grimace on her face. “You can tell you master that I don’t wish to be found, period and there’s nothing she can do to get me back. I’m not going to be her weapon.”

“Lady Lorain will capture you no matter what you do or where you hide; she will find you.” The girl jumped up, vanishing in mid air.

Deon sighed and sheathed his sword. He knew that Lorain would indeed find him eventually. She had been after him ever since he had run away from her labs; Deon walked back to the sidewalk and faded away in the crowd.

Lorain had kidnapped him from the streets to be a lab rat for her scientists. They were working on a way to create the ultimate weapon for her disposal. He only remembered what they did to him too well and the pain they inflicted on his body as a lab rat. The experiments proved to be successful and the ultimate weapon was created through Deon. They had fused his body with ancient magic used over a thousand years ago by powerful mages and wizards, but the ancient magic was too powerful for the mages and wizards, and it destroyed them. The magic had lain dormant until Lorain had unearthed an ancient tablet inscribed with a text no one could decipher save one person. Lorain sought out the decipherer and after he had read the tablet for her, she killed him. It wasn’t long before Lorain figured out how to fuse the magic in a person. Deon was the first of the experiments and the only one that had the full magic fused in him; Lorain was furious when she found out that he had escaped.
