Guardian Angel
On your perch
Up above
You guard me
With tender love
-
You stand by Grandpa
And Papa too
Joining Jay and Mark
Watching what I do
-
You keep me safe
From danger and harm
But you let some things happen
So that I may learn
-
I can picture you-
A smile on your face
Wide wings of down
And your pink dress with lace
-
Knowing you’re there
Helps me get through
All these rough days
Spent without you
-
If I am in trouble
I know what you’ll do
You’ll swoop down before me
And not let harm pass through
-
Temptation knocks at my door
Lust pinches at my sides
I know that doubt’s behind my back
And my sin refuses to subside
-
But I can’t give in
You’ll help me be strong
You’ll make everything feel okay
Even though it’s all wrong
-
You, Grandpa,
Papa, Jay, and Mark
Are all my guardian angels
And I thank God for that
-
I don’t like
That you’re not still here
I feel abandoned
But I know you care
-
Mom and Barbra
Are getting by
And Stella still doesn’t
Understand why
-
I think I speak for all
When this I say:
I miss and love you
May you have peace ‘til my day
-
(Author’s Note: My grandmother was married twice, so that’s why it refers to Grandpa, her first husband, and Papa, her second. Also—names all altered—“Jay” and “Mark” are my two cousins who died in a tragic car accident in 1994. “Barbra” is my aunt, “Jay” and “Mark”’s mother, and “Stella” is “Barbra”’s third child.)
