The following notes were numbered and arranged in the order that they were believed to be written over the period of Patient 814’s stay in Cell #427

Day One – Notes 1-35-

-

I’m new here. Is anyone there? (1)

Yes there is. (2)

Thank God. So there is someone in the neighboring room. My name is Samuel Dyer. I’m new here. May I have your name? (3)

If you must. Mary Dulese. (4)

Right. So, guess we’re going to be neighbors for quite a while, huh? (5)

Until one of us dies, at least. (6)

I heard that once we start getting better, they let us walk outside our rooms. I think I passed a TV room on the way up here. (7)

I wouldn’t know. I was drugged when they wheeled me up here. And Samuel, I think you should get used to the fact that you’re never getting better. Neither of us is. (8)

Call me Sam, please. That’s what my friends call me. (9)

Ha. Friends. If you’re in here, you can’t have many friends anymore. (10)

They abandoned me long before that(11)

You probably deserved it. (12)

You’re quick to judge. (13)

I don’t judge. I just don’t bother getting to know anyone. (14)

Why is that? (15)

They end up dead. (16)

I’m willing to take the risk. (17)

It’s your death wish. Why am I even wasting my pencils on this? And how come you have them on your first day? It took me a few months before they trusted me enough to give me crayons and paper. (18)

Idon’t know. I asked for them. I was thinking of writing down something like a journal. There’s no one to talk to in here. I don’t want to talk to the doctor who comes in to listen.(19)

Why? Are you afraid that he’ll figure it out? (20)

Figure what out? (21)

That you did it on purpose. (22)

I don’t know what you’re talking about(23)

Hahaha. That’s funny. Are you in denial or are you just afraid I’ll think ill of you? You’re among your own kind here, Sam. You don’t have to sugarcoat everything. I killed my son with an axe. Forty whacks, just like that rhyme. You used poison- less pretty rainbows, but same end result nonetheless. (24)

How did you know? (25)

I asked Doctor Connors about you when he came in to check on me. (26)

He’s your doctor too? (27)

Connors is assigned to the whole wing. You’d better be careful of him. He can be nasty at times. And he enjoys it- being nasty, I mean. Don’t try his patience, don’t argue, or he’ll just make it harder for you. Just give him what he wants. (28)

What he wants? What does he want? (29)

Hahaha. That would be telling. (30)

Mary, what does he want? (31)

You’ll know by tomorrow morning. Now leave me alone. We’ll continue tomorrow. (32)

No, I want to know now. (33)

Mary? (34)

Mary? (35)
