Kristen Hayes glanced at her best friend Elizabeth, who had a nervous smile on her face, as she gently placed on arm on her shoulder as a way to comfort her.
"It's probably just stress. That has to be why you haven't gotten your period yet." commented Elizabeth as they headed inside the drug store.
Kris sighed. “I hope so Elizabeth. I really do hope so."
The red head frowned and quickly brought her brunette friend into a hug. In silence they walked, searching through the store for the item they needed. When they came upon it, Kris sucked in a nervous breath and quickly grabbed it, practically dragging Elizabeth to the counter.
Kris ignored the look the sales clerk gave her, quickly grabbing the bag, as she walked out of the store, Elizabeth struggling to keep up with her fast pace.
"Want me to stay?" asked Elizabeth.
Kris shook her head. “Nah...go home Liz. I’ll be fine."
"Are you sure?” she asked softly.
"I am. Just go on home. I’ll call you tomorrow" Kris said as she climbed up the steps to her house.
"Alright.” she said, waving goodbye, before she headed off, leaving a trembling Kris on her doorstep.
Some minutes later, Kris was pacing back and forth in front of the bathroom as she waited the five minutes it would take to determine if she was actually... no! She couldn't be. It just couldn't be true. She shook her head. It was negative. It just had to be.
She jumped when she heard the timer go off. It was time to find out. She slowly headed back into the bathroom and reached for the stick, her eyes closed. Kris didn't know if she could look. She was so nervous.
Gulping as she cracked her eyes open to look down at the object that would hold her entire future, her eyes widened as she stared down at the stick, which told her an answer she had been dreading to confirm..
It was pink.
Dropping the stick, she slid down to the floor, hugging her knees to her chest, as sobs racked her small frame. She, Kristen Hayes, was pregnant.
...how could this of happened?
They had been so careful. She then paled. Alex! How would he take this? He certainly did not want to be a father at seventeen.
Her life was ruined. She couldn't tell her mother. She would be so ashamed.. but what could she do? The grief stricken sixteen year old then slowly wiped the tears from her eyes as she slowly headed out of the bathroom and stood at the top of the stairs.
She took a deep breath. Could she do this? She had to. She didn't have any other choice. Or that's at least how she saw it. Taking another deep breath, she then threw herself down the stairs.
....a sickening crack could be heard a few seconds later.
Some hours later, the teenager was found dead at the bottom of the stairs and as her mother wept in the hospital room, she whispered four words that could of prevented everything. "I would have understood."
