“One Single Tear”

The flashlight roams across the field

I can only assume what they are looking for

They found my glasses not too long ago

And the trail they are following is fresh

Although it’s too late for my soul

My body is near

By the looks on their faces

They already know

One of them cries out

My watch

Soaked in blood

From the ropes ‘round my wrists, no doubt

Another cry

My high school ring

And the worst part about it

The finger, too

I know they are close now

But still a few more treasures

A toe or two

And a shoe for sure

Then comes the best part

The horror they’ll feel

When they see that I’m naked

And face-up on the ground

My head on a root

Like a pillow in rest

My arms still bound

And my feet cut too deep

With no sound from my form

Not even a heart-beat

I try to reassure them

Say that I’m happy now

Tell them I love them

And that I am proud

But they refuse to listen

And one touches my skin

I feel it at rest

But I cannot feel him

My eyes will not open

But not to my fear

I can give them one thing

One single tear

In that tear there is joy

Excitement and pain

Anxiety and grief

Fear and sorrow

For I will not live

For another tomorrow
