A Vanishing Stranger

A
Stranger
They say the heat makes people do crazy things, and maybe it does. But can the heat make people do something completely unimaginable? Something that would make a person take a needle and thread and sew their mouth shut? Something that would make them shy away into a silent phantom?
He used to see her often. She'd be walking in the halls, her head bent down with long blond hair obscuring her face. She had her own silent insanity in her complete muteness. Nobody seemed to notice, but the heat made them talk of crazy things.
She is a stranger, so he would tell himself not to care. There is something about her that sparks his curiosity. He can't help but wonder what that blonde is doing now that he has left that place behind.
He heard that she never spoke, that she was mute. She used to talk all the time, then she just stopped. It was as if one day somebody came and shut down the volume on her vocal cords. She had come back to school after disappearing for a few days and she never said a thing again. Instead, she only communicated when she had to. She was able to put her skills in sign language to use.
But that wasn't all his ears have heard over the years. He noticed, and heard the gossip that she didn't show up at school once a year with no explanation. No one knew where she went. No one knew what she did. She just... disappeared.
She was simply a vanishing stranger.
