Party
A kiss on the air beside
Her cheek, and then they
Take a sip; skull a bottle.
They hide in the shadows
And drink like desert flowers.
Pretty, colourful parrots.
Dolled up. Egyptian eyes
To protect us from
The glare of the night.
Tortured hair falls limp with sweat.
They stumble and sway,
To wordless music, and
The floor has turned to sand.
Smiling, laughing, slurred.
She stumbles up the stairs, holding hands.
Couples kiss in shadows,
While the ambulance arrives,
And sirens sing with the music.
Pleading with big eyes, soft voice,
But she says, “This is all there is.”
I behold a fleeting smile,
And no compromises.
Slightly Obsessive
(Thankyou to Midnight in Eden for her review.)
