First Day of School

As always on the

first day of school,

everyone is hugging,

kissing, screaming,

laughing, fretting, gossiping.

About everything.

What’s your homeroom?!

Lunch?! No! We don’t have

any classes together!

You did what? No way!

To where? Italy? Nice!

I’m so scared! Why?

What if...? There’s no reason

to be scared. I know.

It’s easy to tell who’s in

which grade. Most of the time.

The freshmen are the wide-eyed ones

that look like they are always lost.

The sophomores are the tiny ones

that look like they own the school.

The juniors look like seniors,

but don’t quite match up to the

seniors’ arrogance.

The seniors strut around and actually

own the school.

They do. Everyone

knows that.

It doesn’t stop the popular freshmen from

acting like seniors, though, after they

get used to being in high school.

Because then they can brag,

I’m in HIGH school.

As always on the

first day of school,

there is chaos.

People wandering around, looking

for friends, classes, old teachers.

Papers flying everywhere,

schedules, schedule changes,

attendance cards, lunch cards.

Periods are switched around, adding

to the already unbearable chaos.

As always on the

first day of school,

the principal acts like he knows

what’s going on, like everything

is under control. Only barely.

And so, the

first day of school

continues.
